Fuel Pump Relay Burning Up. Help!!!
I HAVE A 1996 GMC 3500 WITH 7.4L 454. REPLACED FUEL PUMP RELAY 15 TIMES. i TRIED REPLACING FUEL PUMP,IGNITION,RELAY BOX. RELAY IS SUPER HOT TO TOUCH AND BURNS UP IN FEW DAYS. I'M GOING CRAZY AND ANY ADVICE WILL HELP,THANKS.

I would start checking for a high resistance ground..at the fuel pump

Hi,
I wonder if you took any of the old relays apart to see what burned? If it's the points, look at the fuel pump circuit for resistance. Look closely into the connector pins at the pump. They have a history of doing this. The contacts get loose then burn a bit which adds resistance and gradually gets worse. If it is the coil then I would look into the socket where it plugs in. Also do you have the correct relay? I was thinking the fuel pump will keep running through the oil pressure switch circuit and wouldn't need the relay once it is running. I wonder if the oil pressure switch circuit is somehow open and the relay is overloaded as a result? Bob B |
