Oil pump?
I own a 91 LX Accord coupe, auto tranny. I took my car in and had the engine and tranny swapped with "under 40 grand" used. Everything seemed fine driving it away, but days later, My oil light started flickering.
I thought -- flickering? Idling, it would barely come on, like a struggling electric connection. I checked my oil, level was fine. My immediate guess was a failing pump. I took it back to the business that put the engine in. They said it My oil pressure was straight, and diagnosed that it was the pressure sending unit, and quoted it's price at $30 and $80 for labor. I just took it home, and got one on my own from honda for $12 and replaced it myself. At that time I was also realizing my engine was "making a noise." Warming up, the light never came on. As soon as I put it in Drive, the light starts "flickering" -- during acceleration, it will flash stronger, even stay solid. After driving it for a few miles, when I let off the gas or stop and put it in nuetral, it will flash. Come on, come off, come on, come off. While it's lit, I feel vibrations from the engine. It sounds and feels like a slight drop in rpms. That, or my pump I replaced the sending unit, and it made no difference. I took it back, pointing out the "vibrations" coinciding with the light. At the time, I felt even stronger, it's my pump. Well, they claim it's still electical, that I have a bad circuit in my fuse box, that I'll have to replace it -- very very pricy. They also claimed to fix my 'funny idling' by locating a cracked vacuum hose and replacing it. When I got back home with the car... it was still doing the same thing. I'm fed up with the place, and I'm tired of taking my car to them. But I'm broke now, and I don't have any money left to take it to another place for another diagnostic. While on the asphault, the car feels strong, healthy, and smooth. But, I'm stumped! Could I be right, do I have a bunk sump pump? Could it be electrical? Any advice, please! |

Re: Oil pump?
Oil lights come on for one or more of 3 things: oil sensor , oil pump (not usually, when they fail they leak) AND worn bearings. And of course, no oil. You have replaced the sensor, so that isn't it. What you need to do, is to put a pressure guage in place of the oil sensor and see what pressure you have. Worn bearings or worn oil pump will cause low pressure, but you shouldn't have that problem with a 40K engine. What weight oil are you using?
