EGR Valve question

I am not having trouble with My EGR valve (Knock on wood).

I have owned 4 different Blazer/Jimmy Vehicles (an 89, 93, 2000, and a 2001) all with 4.3L engines, and have NEVER had to replace, clean or repair the EGR Valve on any of them, but it sure seems like it is an epidemic, But here's my question.

Is the carboned up EGR valve a reminant or resultant side effect from other problems,

or

is it a result of straying away from stock components, like beefed up performace components

or

Is it due to the local gasolines and/or additives that we use

or

is it simply the operating environment that the engine is in (Like the warm Arizona weather vs the colder Canadian winters)?

Post your theories!

Come on you guys, Instead of swapping these things out every month or cleaning them as often as you brush your teeth, we ought to figure out why!

Re: EGR Valve question

Just a guess, but wouldn't EGR carbonation be caused by an incomplete/dirty burn? ie excess fuel (I'm thinking leaking fuel pressure regulator and the like here), bad spark plugs/wires/cap/rotor, incorrectly gapped plugs, etc

Bad CPI or Fuel Pressure Regulator put too much fuel in and cause the excess carbon that shows up as an EGR problem.

Re: EGR Valve question

Yip, excess fuel is the cause.

1998-1999+ have no EGR valve.

You only see most valve problems with the CPI injection system.

Re: EGR Valve question

So when the engine is burning too rich and the on-board computer system cannot lean out the problem, are you supposed to see a check engine light or get a code?

When my 93 lost the CPI and nut kit, I never got a light or a code. I just started getting 200 miles per tank of gas instead of 330 miles per tank, a very rough idle, and poor performance. But I must have caught it before I carboned up the EGR valve.

After a certain year, it went completely internal for the EGR.

1998 was I think the last year for any type of external EGR valve.

Yours is not the same as the 1994-1997 EGR valves though.

I was going to say, GMpartsdirect.com shows An EGR Valve for my 2000 Jimmy, but it also shows a different part number for earlier models.

Ok so does that mean I can work on this EGR valve myself if something gets clogged and carbonized or is this something I need not worry about? You learn something new every day folks! The problem is retaining it!

there are very few EGR failures with your model year.
