throttle body

What is the name and function of that black box with a plunger on it on the back of my throttle body? It's getting in the way of my throttle lever and doesn't seem to have an adjustment.

Charcoal filter. It absorbs the gas fumes from the gas tank vent.

Thanks for your response. I don't think we're talking about the same thing though. The part I'm talking about has three screws holding it onto the throttle body. It has a wiring harness going to it. There also seems to be a screw on the bottom side of the throttle lever that butts up against the plunger on this part. I took it off and tried to start the car and it wouldn't. I tried to hold the plunger in while a friend started the car and it clicked and the engine won't turn over at all.

its the idle control box, it keeps idle higher when car is warm and raises it when you turn on lights or a/c etc

LOL hahaha sorry but I cant contain myself from the ,,plunger"part is sooo funny I didn t see anything on my Geo looking like a plunger lol only in my bathroom.

crvett69, thanks for your help. Now I can look up information on it and trouble-shoot better. Should the idle control box be blocking the throttle lever so much that the butterfly valve can't close entirely? I can't see how to put the idle control box on any other way but it seems like something isn't right with the way I put it back together.

ok, looked at a couple of the spare throttle bodies i have. thats the fast idle control solenoid (plunger) it should hold the thottle open 1/8-1/4" from throttle adjustment screw. as it warms up it will go back in and allow idle to slow down

Ok, I got the car running by taking the fast idle control solenoid off of the throttle body. Of course, it idles just fast enough to keep running when I first turn it on and later it idles fine. I still can't get the solenoid mounted without jacking the throttle back so far that the car is revved up too much. Right now, I'm running the thing without the idle control solenoid and it is running just fine (of course, cold weather hasn't hit yet either). Is there any reason I shouldn't run the car this way? Am I possibly damaging something else?

It's just to bump the idle when you start it, and when you turn electronics items like headlights on. It's just nice to have. Won't hurt anything not having it there.

Although this is a duct tape way to fix things, it seems to be working just fine and it will probably stay this way.
