key replacements
Ok...i just bought a 99.5 jetta and it only came with one key...I checked with the dealer about getting a new one, but they said it'll be like 140$ for a new one. Is there any way that i can get a used one and just get it reprogrammed, or is there a way to get a cheaper blank key...I just don't want to spend 70$ on a valet key, or 140$ on a regular key...TOO MUCH MONEY!!! I just bought the bloody car, and now i need more money! PLEASE HELP ME!

key replacements Jetta4 99.5
I had the same problem. The reason the cost for the keys is so high is that the dealer is quoting the cost of programming the key... however, I was told that VW did not activate the security programming on the Jetta keys until model year 2000... so I just got a good old fashioned key cut out of an appropriate blank for about $4. It has worked fine for me.
