95 Monte torque converter clutch
I have a 95 Monte that sometimes will lug the engine, sputter around and barely run when slowing down, turning corners, etc. The check engine light came on and I punched it up on the computer and got a trouble code of
P0742A TCC system stuck on I found out this means the torque converter clutch, but what can I do about it? I changed the transmission fluid/filter not too long ago. Would a can of transmission treatment possibly free this up, or could it possibly be electrical, etc? Any help is appreciated, thanks. Bob |

The tcc is controlled by a solenoid in the trans, the pcm commands this on and off based on engine speed, car speed, and engine load, this requires some fairly sophisticated diagnostics, and a good scanner.

I have access to a good diagnostic scan tool, which is how I read the code to tell me the TCC was stuck on, is there anything else to check out before I have the solenoid replaced? I have done a lot of engine work but limited transmission work, but would like to do this myself, how hard of a job are we looking at to replace the solenoid???

With an updated GM Tech II you can command the PCM to disengage the TCC while driving. If it unlocks, your problem isn't the solenoid, but more likely wiring or PCM. If it stays locked, i'd bet on a bad solenoid. If looking at the transmission from the drivers side fender , The solenoid is located on the lower left of the valve body(check links for a visual aid). To remove this, however requires that the transaxle be removed from the car on most models to gain acess to the side cover.

Thanks for the help and great diagrams, I think we are going to tear into this one next week and replace the TCC solenoid.
