HELP!!! air filter problem

The air filter of my moms escort (97) is completly drenched with oil all over it, and i changed it drove home from autozon and it still got drenched with oil within the first 10 mins of driving it home, i checked it when i got back and it is ruined also. whats wrong? is it on its last leg or something?

sounds like some serious blow by. But start smalll check/replace the pcv valve. Then if thats ok do a compression test on the motor

great sounds like its bad. the car has some serious lagging problems lately. it is MUCH slower then it was in the past if that helps any.

Well if you have blow by the plugs are proberbly getting oil soaked. Start small (pcv valve ect) before you panic. The slowness could be from needing new plugs to loosing compression (head gasket, bad valves and such) but the comression test will give you alot of info.

hwo should i check the pcv valve? i took it off and looked at it it seems alright...i dont really know what im lookin for though.

The first step of servicing a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is a visual inspection.

• The PCV valve can be located in several places. The most common location is in a rubber grommet in the valve cover. It can be installed in the middle of the hose connections, as well as installed directly in the intake manifold.
• Once the PCV valve is located, make sure all the PCV system hoses are properly connected and that they have no breaks or cracks.
• Remove the air cleaner and inspect the air and crankcase filters. Crankcase blowby can clog these with oil. Clean or replace such filters.
• Oil in the air cleaner assembly indicates that the PCV valve or hoses are plugged.
• Make sure you check these and replace the valve and clean the hoses and air cleaner assembly.
• When the PCV valve and hose are in satisfactory condition and there is oil in the air cleaner assembly, perform a cylinder compression test to check for worn cylinders and piston rings.

Okay, so we had the vehicle looked at by a service station and they said that there is nothing wrong with the engine, so they changed to oil and changed the air filter again. supposedly the problem was fixxed and there was to be no more oil on the air filter. well, today after driving around for awhile i decided to check it out. sure enough there is clean looking oil(so im guessing its not old dirty oil) on the air filter again!!! explaied this to the dealer and they said the engine is probably bad. anyone ever have this happen to them?

no i dont know if you had the pcv checked and the motor by a dealler and it still is blowing oil. What i dont understand if they "there is nothing wrong with the engine" and they fixed "something" then I'd go back and find out which story is correct. to me it still sounds like blow by but they should have seen that.

yeah ive had about 5 other mechanics tell me its blow-by and i looked up what that meant cuz im a novice and im almost positive thats what it is. Oh well were getting it checked out again on monday so ill have to see what happens, thanks for ur help though!

take your pcv valve and blow in it. if you can blow through both ways, it's shot. get a new one.
