Hard Brakes

My car was running perfectly fine yesterday afternoon. It suddenly started to shake, and now it won't even stay running. I also noticed that the brake pedal is very hard to push in. The only way I can keep the car running is by pumping the brakes. Any ideas? I have the 4.6L V8 engine.
