92 Lebaron a604 problems

I know everyone has problems with this tranny. I'm working on one currently that shifts 1-2 and 2-3 just fine but 3-4 is erratic and it wont stay in fourth gear. After a few seconds bouncing between 3-4 it goes into limp mode and stays there until you turn it off. I tried replacing both speed sensors and the gear selector sensor as well as filter and fluid(with the proper ATF+3). The only things left to try are solenoid pack and the tcm I guess but if I'm just wasting my time I'd rather just swap in a different unit. Anyone have any ideas? I'm wishing not to have to rip it all apart...

first off, change your fluid to ATF +4, as of June 29, 2001, ATF +4 is the only compatible transmission fluid to be used in all Chryslers, the only exception, 1999 and prior minivans.

the atf+3 won't hurt it. Find someplace that can hook it up to a drbII scan tool and maybee they can tell you.

Using atf+3 won't hurt it. But you definately do have some problems try starting with a scan.

Having about the same problem as far as I can tell. Just started the other day. Shifts from first to second and second to third just fine but then when it attempts to go into overdrive the tranny goes into limp mode. I'll slap it into neutral and then back into drive and it will remain in 1st gear for the duration of my drive until it is turned off....starting it back up I get the same drill.... I'm pretty sure my problem is that I got an air bubble in the tranny somehow while I was changing the filter about a month ago, would it really take that long to affect the tranny? Anyway, if it were air how would I go about removing said air? Btw, I put ATF+3 in it when I did the filter change....that's the only thing available in my area that I've been able to find.

well, if you had an air bullbe in there then you would get seccond gear. It definalely sounds like there is something in there that has gone wrong. Try starting with a scan and see if there are any codes in the tcm. The atf+3 won't hurt the tranny.

Unless tcm codes are different than the ecu codes, I got an all clear when I ran a check. Seems I don't even have to reach overdrive for it to kick out of gear as tonight on my way home from work I was still in second and it dropped...probably a minute or so after my car started moving. I think I might have overfilled the tranny the other day, too. Was a bit low so I put in a quart, will check the level tomorrow.

I don't know the gear vs speed vs rpm ratio or whatever, but after it kicks out of gear I am able to go 50mph but my engine is screaming at 4k rpms.

yeah, tcm codes are diffetent, you need a drb II or III to scan them, the connector in under the dash, its a blue one. The ignition thing doesn't work with this. When it kicks out and goes 50 with the engine at 4k thats prolly cause it is in 2nd. Do a scan and figure out what the shift pressures are and anything else that it can tell you and go to a dealership and tell them what the pressures are and they can tell you prolly what is wrong with it. Well, thats what i did to mine and they told me what was wrong with it. I got it re-built and now there is not a problem.

A rebuild still costs more than what I have to put into it unfortunately. :\

I would tell you to find one from a junkyard with low miles and in good shape with the pinion intact, but ya never know if the one from a junkyard is good. Sometimes they are worse than the one you have.

I've got the same problem. It's start 2 weeks ago 3 qt of trani oil missing. Add atf+3.This doesn't change it run on 1 an 2nd gear 3 get in. If I press really slowly and after one minute it bonce to finally stop in 2nd.
It a Lebaron 1994, I will check the voltage on selenoid.

Well, turns out I needed a new trans. They said 3rd was shot, but I was driving in 3rd, must've been overdrive that was shot. Anyhow, fact of the matter is my only option is to go with a Jasper reman....gonna stick me for $1900 plus labor tho. Shit happens I suppose. At least my car will be reliable after this....hell I've replaced just about everything else.
