Depending on the options that an SS is equipped with from SLP, an SS can have 325, 335, or 345 hp from the factory. Z28's are rated at 315 maybe, not quite sure cause I've never driven on or asked about it. Besides the exhaust and intake mods that create the differences in horsepower, the other differences are cosmetic (hood, spoiler, ground effect on rear bumper if center mounted exhaust is ordered, grille, etc.). There are several suspension packages available as well. Hope that helps you a little bit.

All of my aftermarket stuff is on the intake and exhaust sides of the engine, and in the sig above. Those in total have come to about $700.00 for the aftermarket stuff on mine. I used to have a 90 Integra, and I'd not go back to a 4 cylinder if my life depended on it. I love my car.

The main ones that I frequent are this board, www.slpeng.com, and a couple of local F-body associations. There's www.camaroz28.com, www.ls1.com, and most other good board you can access through links at this boards.

The performance increase is minimal. Hardly worth the extra money spent. However, I think a SS looks better then a Z28 (from factory) and the "rarity" of them is what most people are interested in.
Also try: www.LS1Tech.com That sites purely a "technical" board that focus' on Powertrain/Driveline/Suspension aspects of all LS1 powered cars, as well as drag racing/road racing them.

If I still remeber correctly when I went to get my 2000 Camaro SS the SSW package was a litle more then 3k. Well now it is probably more. The package included differnt rims, tires, hood, spoiler, air intake, and SLP dual exhaust. After 2000 the SS rims are ugly and if you wanted to get a LS1 get a 2001 or 2002. there is a bigger LS1 intake. Or you can buy a 98-00 and just upgrade to the bigger LS1 intake for $800 and gain 20 hp. My advised if you are looking to get a Camaro LS1 get a Z28 and put the hood on it($700), SLP loudmouth exhaust($350), FLP Full length headers and y pipe($1,200), Gears if M6 4.11's ($400) if auto 3.73 with a 3,400rpm torque converter($900) you will be running low 12's and look almost the same as an ss with out the wing ($400). That is only if you buy brand new. You can get a 2000 SS for around 20K with pretty low miles on it. Stay with the Dark Blue Metallic, pewter, or the Burgandy. You don't see many of those. Also if its 2002 get the sunset orange an awesome color. Hope that helped.

.
Why would he want a y pipe aren't x pipes better for performance?
A standard Camaro SS from Chevrolet is 325 hp and it's Ram Air inducted. Not to mention has superior handling then the Z28. A standard Camaro Z28 has 310 hp, no Ram Air. Look at it this way... SS = More power, better handling Z28 = Less power, not as good handling, but still not bad. |

Devil,
The SS does not have better handeling then the Z28, you can get the 1LE package with is bigger upper and lower control arms and sway bars if i remember correct. That is the only preformance handeling package Chevy offers for the Camaro and Firebird/Trans Am. And the reason for the Y pipe is the LS1 F-bodies are single cat cars. So you can not use a X-pipe. If you buying from the dealer the SS is not worth it. You can not tell the difference in the 15 HP from the factory. Better off getting a Z28 unless you can get a SS for the same price

.I guess so but thats something you have to order on extra to the Z28. Stock for stock the SS has the better handling, although with the package I'm guessing its still cheaper then buying an SS?

Ram Air helps in the long run but hell, why not just buy it as an add on for a Z28? |

Alright, lemme chime in on a few discrepancies I noticed.
Looking at it performance wise, there is a very MINIMAL, if ANY performance gain to be seen between the SS and Z28. Most people that plan on MODDING their LS1's prefer Z28's as they are not only cheaper, but are also typically lighter. The reason LS1 owners opt for a new Y-Pipe is because the left bank side of the stock Y-Pipe is very narrow and the entire unit flows poorly. Fitting an X-Pipe under them is difficult and must be done custom, leaving very little ground clearance. Most hardcore drag racers choose to go this route (I am also looking into a TRUE dual exhaust with X-Pipe setup), as it typically gives slightly more power. Just to correct something that was said earlier, the LS1 cars, and late LT1 cars are equipped with 2 catilytic converters. Only the early year LT1 cars had the single cat.
