Question 79 gear or rearend swap?

I picked up a 79 Z-28 that was used for drag racing. I am looking to put it back on the street, but to do so I will either have to change the gears or change rearends. It has a 10 bolt 8.5 posi with 4.88 gears and has been completely rebuilt recently. These rearends seem to be plentiful so I will probably sell this rearend and find another to replace it. My question is since it is obviously not stock what should I ask for it? I have a set of new 3.73's that have been sitting on my shelf for awhile, what would it take to swap the gears out? I also have some other parts to get rid of. I have a pair of fiberglass racing buckets with pads that came with the car. A fresh set of 305 heads with 60cc chambers, casting #354434. A transgo stage 1 or 2 shift kit for the non lockup th350,still new in box. Any info or advise you can give on the rearend would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 79 gear or rearend swap?

not that knowledgeable on rearends but I do know the 8.5" 10 bolt can be as strong as the 12 bolt if it's built right, and since it was just rebuilt and for the dragstrip nonetheless it should be plentiful strong. But if you buy a rearend somewhere else you're risking having a rear that wasn't taken care of or with a lot of miles on it, and besides, swapping gears is a lot easier than swapping rears (I'm guessing anyways). If you find a good deal on a used one and trust the person you could probably make a decent amount if you sell the one you have now, but personally I'd change gears.

Re: 79 gear or rearend swap?

Dude if you have a rearend built for racing keep it and just have gears put in it , but make sure that it does't have a spool in it or you will hop around corners.
