98 Trooper rear window FM Atenna connection with after market stereo
I installed a new deck in my 98 Trooper. Its FM atenna is the type laid on each of the rear side windows. Normal conncetion of an FM atenna is using a single standard connector. Anyone who has hooked up a car radio knows what this looks like. With this vehical, however, it has two connectors. One of which is smaller then the other. All after market decks use a single receiver connector. Have any of you ever encountered this and what was your solution. Feel free to email my you post if you like. [email protected]
Thanks, Devin |

Re: 98 Trooper rear window FM Atenna connection with after market stereo
I just posted the exact same question last week and haven't received much response from it... I called radio shack and two different isuzu stores to see if there is a connector that will change the double to a single. However, no one seems to have a solution to this problem. If you hear anything then please email me as well at [email protected].

The most common problem encountered when fitting an aftermarket stereo to a Trooper is lack of power to the antenna amplifiers. I can't remember the wire colour but it can be identified using the original stereo. It only powers up when the stereo is turned on. If you use an ISO adapter this position is not wired through and you must either hard wire or fit another pin to the adapter and wire to the electric antenna out connection or to an ignition switched 12V. Don't worry about the second antenna connection, just use the "normal connector". There is an amplifier behind the panel underneath each of the window antennas and these are then combined into the single antenna connection at the rear of the stereo. I never traced the other antenna connector to see where it goes but I suspect it may be for a GPS antenna although it is not a standard GPS connector.
IMPORTANT: Only use a meter to check the wire for the amplifiers. If you use a bulb probe you will blow the internal fuse in the Isuzu oem stereo. |

Re: 98 Trooper rear window FM Atenna connection with after market stereo
Hi,
I have a solution, I just changed the radio in my 2002 trooper, and this is what I did: Buy an aftermarket harness (metra or the like) and on your factory harness there is a wire that the metra does not have (#12) that is the amplifier for the diversity antenna, connect the power antenna or amp turn on lead from your new radio to this lead( just run the wire through the metra harness don't cut the wire from the factory harness) and there you go, that's all. Just use the larger antenna lead and tape off the small one. If you would like to get fancy, buy a GM antenna adaptor, it has the small GM lead which is the same as the small antenna lead in the trooper to large, cut the small lead leave enough to cut back and expose the sheath and center wire, also buy a metra (or other brand)12" antenna extension, splice the small lead into the wire from the large (use a lot of electrical tape!)and now you can use both antennas with your new radio, I should have taken a pic before I installed, I really do not hear a difference from the singe to dual, but if you have two why not use them! |
