What would it cost to put a clutch in a 91 Jetta?
I was in town at a used car dealer, looking for a beater to get me through next year. I happened to see a 91 Jetta sitting in the back of the lot. $595, high miles (300,000 kms+) and needs a clutch. How much does it cost to have the clutch replaced if I have the parts? I don't have any interest in high performance stuff, so OEM quality is fine with me. How long does it take to do the clutch? There's a garage just up the road that only charges 35 an hour but I don't know if he's done a clutch on a VW before.

I think it's about 4-5 hours. They can be a pain if you don't know what you're doing. Ask if they have the correct clutch alignment tool, it's very different than on other cars. Most common error is leaving the ground strap off & frying the ECM.
