Hey all;
I was changing my oil, and I couldn't take off the oil filter. I had installed it and changed my oil the last time it was done. I think I may have over-tightened the filter. I have one of those handles with the rubber loop thing. I sprayed WD-40 and liquidwrench on the top. I tried doing it while warm too. All I got was some dents in the filter housing then. So I stopped. This won't cause a problem, will it? It's not leaking or anything, but I was hoping I could keep it on until the next time its in the shop, then get the filter changed. On a side note, Last night I was cruising around, and was caught up with a 97 ESi, probe, sunfire, and Grand Prix. We cruised around, then stopped in local parking lots. I killed everyone, except for the Grand Prix. Had 200hp stock, and my nose was right next to his door. So close. Almost 200hp!!! It was the best racing night I've ever had... just so much fun. ESi had header and exhaust. Probe had exhaust and intake. It was great when I popped my hood and everyone was just standing around, starring in awe. Can't wait to get some more money and beef that shit up even more now! Good times.

Did you remember to put a little bit of oil on the new filter gasket before installing the new oil filter when you changed your oil last time? If you didn't that is most likely your problem. My oil filter did get stuck one time and I couldnt get a hold of it. I bought a strap wrench at autozone and it worked like a charm. It has a shaft that connects to a socket wrench and a nylon strap on the other end, easy to use and works good. Try that, and I REALLY recomend changing that oil filter before driving you car again. The old oil filter on you car now has already filtered its fair share of particles out of the oil, using the old filter again runs the risk of overloading it, which means those particles can get to your engine. Or even worse the filter becomes stopped up with particles and cant flow. Guess what no oil is going to the engine
When you finally do get that filter off and ready to install the new please remember to rub a little oil on the new oil filter's gasket. I just dip my finger in some new or old oil (it doesnt matter) and rub it on the gasket. Also dont overtighten that filter, read on th oil filter box and it will tell you how tight it needs to be.

I did that. And that wrench thing isnt working at all. Just dented it. The oil I took out was still in good shape, so I dont think that Ill have a problem with overloading. I wont keep it like that for long. Ill prob just end up taking it to my mechanic... I hate doing that, but hey. Thanks

I always use an old timing belt wrapped strategically around the filter and my hand. Practically wrecks my hand sometimes, but its super quick. The EVO is back on the smaller filters again so my filter wrench fits it. Have you tried one of those? A metal loop with a handle on it. I've never seen a filter those wont take off. Can't use them on some cars though, no room. In the end if its really stuck I would probably try one of the oil filter sockets that fits the end of the filter (provided it has the teeth and not completely round) and the strap wrench at the base (to prevent just twisting the filter body). You can also stab a screw driver through the filter and twist it off. But at that point you arent going anywhere until that filter is off

So, I have no choice? I have to take it off? Like right now? I forgot about the ole stabby and twist. The tool I got has a rubber strap on it, with a plastic handle. It didnt turn at all. Just slightly dented the filter. Thanks

Wether not you leave it on until the next oil change is up to you. Many people do filters every other oil change after all. But on turbo cars, I like to do it every time, cheap insurance. Its up to you. Waiting to get it in a shop might be better, because as I said above, if you stab and twist, you have no choice but to finish the job.

I talked to my dad. he said that back in the days, companies told people to change their oil every 10,000, and change the filter everyother. I'm going to wait for now. Won't be that bad without the change. Thanks all

Its actually best to go by what the manufacturer suggests. Though mitsubishi suggests every 5k for oil and every 10k for the filter, its not far off from what your dad suggests. Some companies require filter and oil change every 3k but mainly for their factory warranties. Honda civics have 7500 mile intervals. I always just do mine every 5k.
