944 fuel filter

i have just put a new DME relay for my porsche 944 and it has a fairly new fuel pump. when i first got a few weeks ago we started it up after putting it on a battery charger and drove it around for a few minutes. we then shut it off the check the levels of everything in the engine and now when we go to start it it cranks but wont fire. could it be that the fuel filter got clogged with the old gas in the tank so now it doesnt get any fuel? could someone please tell me where the fuel filter is located and how i can check to see if it is clogged.
thanks

Re: 944 fuel filter

Did you make sure that you have spark? Is the fuel pump running for sure? The Fuel filter is about 2 feet farther down the fuel line than the pump, it's a cylinder mounted more toward the middle of the car and a little higher. The only way to really check it is take it off and try to blow through it.

Re: 944 fuel filter

You could try to loosen the nut on the front of the fuel rail while you are turning over the engine. If fuel eventually starts working it's way around the threads you are getting fuel pressure.

yes we know it does have spark because we drove it around and it will start and run for a few seconds off of a shot of starter fluid. how do you suggest making sure that the pump is working. it appears to almost brand new

Re: 944 fuel filter

When someone turns the car over have another person by the pump. You should be able to hear it humming or feel it vibrate.

Re: 944 fuel filter

I believe the filters are about $18. Don't bother trying to clean it, just get a new one. There is one fuse for the fuel pump...I'm not sure where it is. If you have the porsche manual that came with the car it will tell you.

Re: 944 fuel filter

Yes, just replace the old one...
Although that doesn't sound like the problem...Maybe a relay somewhere?

Good luck/skill

Oh, you might try the question over at the Pelican Parts Porsche board too. Good guys there.
