finicky cold starts
About three weeks ago the truck ('97 3.2L) wouldn't start for my daughter. Single click only. Checked the battery water. It was low enough to expose the top of the electrodes. Topped it up and jumped it and it started up. Voltage checked out when off, running, and running with accessories. It was good until this morning...
Same symptoms. Single click, no start. Water level still good. Yanked it out and had it tested at Discount. Battery good. Full charge. You'd assume from that info that the truck should have started and the alt is charging the battery properly. Went home. Cleaned the battery cable connectors which were pretty clean anyway. Tried to start it with the radio on (it came on for some reason), and it only clicked. Turned the radio off, and it fired right up. Voltages checked out with the truck off (12V), with the truck running (14V), and with the truck running and a variety of accessories on (still about 14V). What bad assumptions am I making? I'm out to check starter connections. What else could it be? Should I have the alt checked out? Thanks for any info! Rick |

Re: finicky cold starts
Let me add that the battery is less than a year old...
Thanks for the reply Ryan. I'm going to let it go awhile and see if it continues to cause problems. Right now it's starting perfectly. |

Re: finicky cold starts
If I read my Haynes correctly, power is getting to the solenoid (click), but not to the starter motor. The manual says that only the 3.1L has the solenoid mounted separately above the starter. Is it correct to say that there is some sort of solenoid within my starter?

Re: finicky cold starts
Thanks! I'm guessing it's easier to throw a new one in rather than clean the contacts?
I cleaned up most of the oily mess down there from leaky valve cover gaskets. Another good reason to get that done... Last edited by surferfletch; 09-10-2005 at 03:38 PM. |

Re: finicky cold starts
Well, the problem continues intermittently. My daughter has to shut all accessories off at times to get it to start. It's either a single click, or a normal, proper sounding startup. Battery voltages still check out.
As I browse the parts sites online, I see that you can buy the solenoid and starter separately, but the Haynes states that they are one unit. How different is this setup than other starters? I see the solenoid for my VW is piggybacked on top of the starter and they are bought as one unit. Also, has anyone else had to swap a starter out? Who is the OEM manufacturer? I've Bosch and other starters for the '97 3.2L. Cheapest I've found yet is a Bosch reman unit for $114.55 from Drivewire.com. Thanks for any help! |

Re: finicky cold starts
New NAPA starter seems to have fixed it. Almost as easy as changing your oil.
I still don't know why the Haynes differentiates this starter from any other, though... Last edited by surferfletch; 09-15-2005 at 08:50 PM. |
