Need help ASAP!
I have a 1993 laser (not turbo), no real problems, valve gasket does need to be replaced, but...3 days ago, on the way home, it suddenly loses power, and begins to misfire...I was able to continue to drive home, under 50mph,no check engine light, no warning.. she will still start and run, just rough running, and misfires when revved, could this be a fuel filter, oil on my plugs, timing, or something even worse? I really don't want to drive her, even to the mechanic, until I have a rough idea of what I am dealing with. I have NO idea where the fuel filter is on this car, I am more of a Chevy type person when it comes to this kind of thing...any help you all could give me will be well appreciated!!!!
Thanks Misty |

Sorry to hear about your laser. This is what happened, you broke a cylinder head (piston head). It shakes the whole engine when running, I had a 91 eclipse do this to me. Its probably cheaper to replace the engine then have someone dig around in the block trying to rebuild it. I went through a huge trial and error before I found out what was wrong with mine. You might want to try this aswell. First check all spark plugs and plug wires (do not disconnect all plug wires at once, its hard to remember which one goes where) to see if they are clean and clear. Then have your coil pack (like a distirbutor) checked to see if it is operating right, this could fail and cause misfires to happend. Like I said the worst is that you broke a head, now you are lucky seeing that you are driving the 1st generation of these cars and the motors are cheap. It is a 2.0L and not the 1.8L? What you are looking for is an 89-94 4g63 engine(if it is a 2.0L). Well thats all that comes to my mind copy and paste this web address to your web search bar, here you will find the results for a new engine I know a few people around here that have these cars and motors in a junk yard if need be email me and I will see what they want for one of thier motors. OK, Checked all the plugs and wires, two wires are extremely rust, and dirty,(1 and 3) semi cleaned them and took the car around the block. Idle is better, still get a miss about 4th gear, and coming home the second time, couldn't get the damned thing to pull up the hill of my driveway (very steep hill). Should I try replacing wires and plugs, or go look for a new engine?

Re: Need help ASAP!
Don't go replacing your motor until you are sure that is the problem. I would start with some basic troubleshooting. If the plugs and wires look old/shot, I would start there. I would also recommend a compression test. You can pick up a compression gauge for about $20. Definately a good investment

Your problem could very well be with your spark side of the motor but the odds of it just crapping out on ur way home i serioiusly frown on usually when plugs and wire go bad the gradually go but the fuel side and air side shouldn't be frogotten since you could have picked up some dirty fuel somewhere and clogged an injector or you fuel filter if it were one of my cars i would replace the fuel filter and try putting some injector cleaner in it
when trouble shooting large diesel's in school we were taught to start with the cheapest and work up since most of the time the fuel filter is cheap than plugs and wire i would start there you also should check your airfilter with gas engines u shouldn't see this type of problem due to an air filter but u shouldn't froget about it ither

I had a similar problem, it turned out to be the EGR solenoid (first one of the three on drivers side for your car). It was broken where the hose connects. Since your's is a 93, it may not have this solenoid but you can check. It allowed the EGR to be open all the time and put a lot of exhaust gasses back into the intake. I just blocked off the EGR and the problem went away. If the plugs and wires don't fix you then I would check the EGR and solenoid (if you have it). Go here for a visual and description.http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Eng.../solenoids.htm Also check for other vaccum leaks. Good luck
