My 97 was ratteling and sounded like the exhaust had a leak on start up. I went to MIdas and they said the system had no leaks. Then it started whining which would increase as the speed increased. My solution was to turn the radio up and ignore it. It went away after a while and never did it again. I am of the opinion that all Escorts rattle and whine some. It just goes with the territory.
