New Exhaust pipe

I need a new tailpipe for my 2001 Cav 2.2L V4 ... right now it's like rusted to shit and half of the upper part is gone, but it sounds nice as hell when I hit the gas, does anyone else notice it? My engine sounds like it's beefed up and sounds ALOT better then a V4....Do all the cars like mine do this or is it because of how the tailpipe managed to rust off?

FYI: The engine is super clean, but untouched so far. :\

Any suggestions on why it sounds better...and suggestions for what brand/type of tailpipe I should purchase?

It's because you are hearing the unmuffled combustion ehuast gasses. Sorry it's not your car's "power", but rather the exhaust leak.

Just replace the rusted out section with a replacement piece of steel ehuaust pipe. Most muffler shops should be able to do it for around $50 or so if it's a straight section. Bent sections may be a little more. If you want to replace the whole system, it obviously will cost more but you have more options as you could go with stainless steal, larger diameters, or hi-flow cats/mufflers (the last two could [but not will] add a little extra power).

Re: New Exhaust pipe

If it's just the tailpipe it shouldn't have gotten louder, unless your muffler is rusted out too, then it will cost you a little more, but it shouldn't be much more than $50 if you find a good cheap muffler shop.

Also, It's a l4, not a V4

hmm... wonder what a V4 would sound like, if there is one...

Depending on if the rusted out portion is pre-muffler or post-muffler. If it is pre-muffler, like I presumed, it very much would get louder as there would be a hole for sound to escape from.

Re: New Exhaust pipe

Only the tailpipe is rusted, the rest is fine. And the sound comes from my engine, not from the back of the car. You can tell it directly comes from the engine... You also know it's from the engine cause once my speed hits 20MPH, the noise gets really loud if I put it to the floor and it gets to about 70 pretty fast and makes the sound all the way up to it and then it stops making the sound around 65MPH...it also returns at 80-90

and I have no idea why I put V4, sorry for that :\ ^

Dude it aint the engine lol. If the thing has a hole its going to make noise. The piece going onto the muffler on my 03 cavi rusted due to a hack job on the weld ($65 dollars for shit) It cracked and sounded like i was running a V8 cuz my buddy with a cobra was sayin "DUDE WTF did you do to that car" LOL . So its the exhaust hole. And

Re: New Exhaust pipe

there is such things as a v4 just not in a cavalier and it should be that much to replace depending on where you live

Get out of the car and have someone rev it a little. If the leak is at the back by the muffler you will hear the louder than normal noise coming from back there, but if its louder than normal up front the leak is probably up there. I'd check your down pipe for rust holes or a place where it came disconnected.
