96 cobra cam pref?
unlike the mopar muscle pushrod motors, the cobra has sohc (2 cams).
im looking for low end torque with a long duration and good lift. i did some research and am confused on which cams fit perfect for the 4.6 cobra motor. does anybody have any suggestions for a set of good cams to go for?

Different then what? I suppose your referring to a different thread that I said the 03/04 Cobra is different then other Mustangs? Dude, get over it.... Would you accept modding tips on your Mustang from a guy who owns a Yugo?? lol If you would then your an idiot! Yes, MOST Mustangs are alike... YES, some mods are good reguardless of what breed of car you run.. but guess what jr... the smart people find the guys who actually run the same cars with success, and find out exactly what they are doing to make the power they make.... what parts work on the exact same car.... I don't ask the Cobra guys on how to mod my Grandprix GTP.... because there's no point... it's a different breed of car. Sure you can say pop a smaller pulley to increase boost.. but which one? Which manufacturer makes the best pulley to reduce belt slip? .. how about which belt works best for which pulley? or do I need to change injectors w/ said pulley? How about how much heat will it generate? What's the effects on drivability and milage? What gap should the plugs be set at for a specific pulley size to eliminate blow-out? .... Then you have specifics of the 6-spd trans, the independent rear... and the inner cooler.... and the hydro-boost brakes...all wrapped up to make the 03/04 Cobra deffinately different breed of Mustang.... You can't give me hints on launching an 03/04 on BFG DR's... because you've never done it! You can guess on what MIGHT make it perform better, or what MIGHT make more HP.. but you would only be guessing... and frankly, I'm not going to waste my time or money on guess's!! |

I have no problem with someone making a suggestion to check out another forum. But I do have a problem when someone says not to listen to me when they have no clue if I can tune a boosted motor or even tie my own shoes!

But you only know how to tune YOUR type of boosted motor.... What real world experience do you have in tuning a dohc 4.6 modular motor? From the sound of it, you don't even have enough experience to KNOW that not all motors respond the same to boost.. or KNOW that tuning each motor depends on a WIDE variety of factors... and unless you have EXACTLY the same motor class, your just guessing. Considering my family has been drag racing, 2wd modified truck and modified tractor pulls, and building street cars for ALL my life... I've been turning wrenches on blower cars for over 30yrs.... I've built blown bb fords, bb chevys, bb pontiacs, pontiac v-6, sohc 4.6, dohc 4.6, dohc 5.4, hemi's, Aris (610ci hemi-type racing engine for those who don't know), Merlin V-12 (WWII fighter engine).....Hell, we even built a paxton sc VW bug 1900 engine just to see if we could!! Even with all my experience, I wouldn't consider myself an expert on all boosted motors... but then again, I know they are all different. ANY wrench monkey can toss a blower on an engine and make more power.. but to do it RIGHT.. (make a ton of reliable efficient power) .. now that is a whole different subject. Frankly if you felt "insulted" by my sugestion that he check out a forum who deals entirely with HIS TYPE OF CAR, then that's your issues, not mine. I was simply stating FACTS... if you've never modded a paticular class of motor, then you really are just guessing... and when dealing with a $30,000+ car... only an idiot would make a decision base on a guess. |

Re: 96 cobra cam pref?
Hey, I am a wrench turning monkey, but I might be able to turn into a homo sapeian(sp) if I can evolve around what I learn.
Might I add, you have a very imresive list of engines you have worked on. Which engiens do you find the easiest to work on to get power out of them?

Re: 96 cobra cam pref?
Back to the original question..... Far as I know, the Three C's (Crane, Comp, Crower) all make cams for the DOHC 4.6. I'd give one of them a call, or get in touch with Paul's High Performance, which is pretty much THE place for 4.6 performance, be it supercharged or not.
Are the cams your first mod? If I may make a recommendation I'd personally go for the 99/01/Mach 1 style intake manifold for starters, then go from there. That's definitely worth some pony's from the get-go. That's if anyone's willing to listen to me, since all I own is a '95 truck and a '94 SVT Cobra. Then again I've helped build and tune everything from an SVT Focus, a ~300 HP 2.5 liter Dodge Daytona Turbo, several SOHC 4.6's and 4 DOHC's, one of which was a Mach 1, another was a '98 Steeda Cobra with a P-1SC on it.....Not to mention several 5.0's, a few AMC's including a circle track car, and even some SBC's and a 455 rocket...Not to mention a whole pile of medium and heavy diesels I've cranked on in my life, from HMMWV's and 5-tons to Tractors... So is my resume' good enough to give advice? Or do I have to go buy a terminator Cobra first? BTW how are you gonna win if you run the same tried-and-true parts that everybody else already has? the trial-and-error and learning is half the fun to me. I hang around this forum a lot to get different Ideas. On the corral, everyone says AFR's and an FTI custom cam. On SVT-P, everyone says "Hey, we don't have many 5.0 Cobras here!" Here, there are some more diverse ideas, from HiFlow's pair of Foxbody's to the only guy I see posts from right now building a carb'd/vortech'd motor, to a lot of V-6 guys and noobs. OK, I'm off my soapbox....
