POLL " Engine swap , is this good deal "

Well I guess most of you guy know that I had oil leak, and cost $600 to fix it, Im driving a 97 gs 5 speed with 118xxx mike. Here the story ( im not good a writing english , please try to understand ). Today I went to junkyard , and found 2 dead eclipse , both are 96 , one are RS and GS. I buy alot of interior part from the gs ( I want restore factory interior , after 2 year of red interior ). Then I saw a gs engine ( in really good condition , and only had 88xxx mile on it. after rip all the part I need , I come to the owner and pay the money ( $20 for all the interior I need in the the domini dash ). Then I ask about the engine , he say the engine still running really good , he say he bought the rs to fix the gs , but he got alot of other work to do , so he quit fixing the gs. He say he want to sell that engine for $500 ( Mabe I can get him down by 300 ). I went home day that day , and call my trusty mechanic , talk about fixing my engine seal leak , he say it cost $250 . Then I talk to him about the gs engine, after while , he told me that If I can buy that engine , bring to him , he will put in for me , include all the gasket , include head gasket , new timing bell , water pump , engine seal, every seal you could properly think off. ( but for the deal , he will keep my old engine ). Is this a good deal ? , If I can buy the gs engine for $300 ( even $500 ) is this still a good deal , is my mechanic trying to rip me off ?, By the way the gs is auto , and my car is manual , mabe I just buy tha auto tranny too. I know it horrible writting , but it the best I can do for now ( mabe later too ) Im really exciting now , start saving up money, PLEASE GUY GIVE ME SOME COMMOM , I NEED ALOT , I PROPERLY TAKE THE PICTURE AND UP THIS TOPIC WHEN SOMETHING NEW.

Its all up to you. I mean do you already have a newer timing belt or head gasket on now? Do you plan to do them during the course of the time you keep the car? Do you plan to keep this car for long or are you going to want to sell for something else soon or trade for a turbo'd car? These are things you should think about. I mean getting the engine out and getting to the shop might be a b*tch without experience or the right equipment. If you do it...make sure you mark or examine your timing belt to make sure he does change that and the other stuff. You don't wanna get screwed either. Think it over, will it just be easier and senseable(sp?) to pay $250 and have it done? Its all about how you feel and think about the ?'s I asked you. I'd keep the the 5sp if I was you even though I have an auto myself. Whatever you prefer but switching tranny's means spending more cash. Good luck, hope w/e you do works out for ya.

Yes I really want to keep this car, I got change the timing bell year ago ( by the same mechanic ), I never change the head gasket before. But one thing In my mind is my car had alot of mile already 118k , and it knock some time now( I beat the engine alot back in high school ), and the new engine Im getting only 80XXX mile on it, I dont mind riding the auto as long IM RIDE A DSM ( Im very pround to ride a DSM ).

my sister riding 97 rs auto now , I think she got 128k on it, she dont like it any more , my dad bought her a 2004 corola, the rs got oil leak too ( I change mobile 1 for her the first day she bought it ( 10XXX ), mabe I just use this car and swap the engine, so i dont have to worry about auto to manual , manual to auto , what ya think. She never had any timing belt change or head gasket.

Thumbs up

If you really want an auto then go for it, keep your sisters car and swap the engine. I wouldn't have tranny and engines swapped unless you really have some money to kill. Why not get both cars fixed whether you want to put the 88xxx engine it ior not up to you. Then you can sell both cars and have plenty of money for a turbo'd dsm and even some mods.

If you hear a little tapping/clicking noise in the engine while its idling/warming up, thats lift tick. Its very common, I have it...Im sure many people on here have it also. Now if the car is blowing blue smoke, I wouldnt purchase engine. I think blue means worn internals.(feel free to correct me if im wrong). I think white smoke could mean coolant problems. Just check for smoking and see if the engine runs some what smooth.
