5 bolt to six bolt swap questions (hubs/rear end)
Hi all, I have a toyota based camper with the 5 bolt one ton rear end and we are swapping it out for the 6 bolt version (Broke an axle) I was wondering if anyone had any tips, how to type of advise on doing this. We purchased a truck with the 6 bolt setup and are swapping it out ourselves.
Also we want to swap out the front end hubs so there are six bolt rims all the way around so we can carry only one spare, is this possible? One last question, the camper has air suspension in the back, anyone know how much air to put in these? Dont want to blow them. Thanks |

Now that the BS is over, back to your question - more detail is needed. What exactly broke? (an axle shaft or the axle housing) Is the "6 bolt" axle (I assume you mean 6 bolts for the wheel) from a 4WD? What years are the camper (axle) and new axle?

Re: 5 bolt to six bolt swap questions (hubs/rear end)
Hi, yes 5 bolt meaning 5 lugs for the rims same with the 6 bolt. THe camper is a 1985 with the 5 bolt rear end and it used adaptor plates to get two wheels on each side. This from what Im learning now is a known major problem, the axle was not ment to have two wheels on each side and the added stress and the weight of the camper causes it to eat bearings and sometimes break the axle, which is what happened to us.
The doner truck is a 92 two wheel drive with a true dual wheel rear end. Ive got both rear ends out now and waiting on some parts, new bushings for the springs and shocks. The 5 bolt fit in fine in the 92 doner truck so I dont see a probem with putting the 6 bolt on my camper. Another question for you though, we would like to have just one spare to carry and Im thinking of trying to put the front spindles from the 92 that are also 6 lug onto my camper so we have 6 lug rims all around. Do you know if thats possible? Thanks ~ Phil |

Can't help w/the front, but probably doable. Toyotas have a lot of interchangeability between years/models. If not you could get a 5-lug to 6-lug adapter for the fronts.
Are you just going to put the 92 6-lug shafts in the 85 housing or swap the complete axle? Sounds like the 92 might be heavier duty all around, making it worthwhile. If not, as long as the spline count and shaft length are the same (should be) you're OK to swap shafts. FWIW, the 85 1 ton 2WD rear uses the same 8" 3rd member as the 4WD's, same spline count too.

Re: 5 bolt to six bolt swap questions (hubs/rear end)
Hi, I am using the entire rear end. Looks like its going to fit, have it all off and cleaning it up before installing it. THe issue is the ebrake cables. Not a simple task to remove the short ones from the 6 lug one and put on the long ones for the camper.
Also any idea how to know what the gear ratio is between the two rear ends? Im hoping they are the same but realize it may not be. ~ Phil |

Quote:
To figure out the gear ratio scroll down to the bottom of this http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/ to decode the axle code on the tag under the hood. Should be something like Gxx2 (G= 8" ring gear diam which the 1 ton axle should be).

Re: 5 bolt to six bolt swap questions (hubs/rear end)
arent the 1 ton axles full float. so it wouldnt matter what the actual axle is from it would bolt into the hub
