It all started on Saturday my wife calls me and tells me her car won't start, I go over and turn the key and it turns over but doesn't start. I find that It is getting no fuel. I pull off the fuel filter and it is very dirty so I replace it and the car starts and she drives it home. Forward 2 hours later we are going to a wedding hop in the car and it won't start. ( now i realize that the pump is not making any sounds) So Sunday I pull the fuel tank off and pull the pump. Monday I replace the pump with a new one and the car runs fine. She drives it to work on Tuesday and does some running around that nite. Wednesday rolls around and car will not start again. I've checked the fuses and the relay switch. Pulled the wiring and plugged them back in to make sure they are snug. Now i'm not sure where to go from there. HELP ME PLEASE. It's a 2002 sunfire with a 2.2 motor. auto trannie

Re: No power to fuel pump
Did you replace the fuel pump relay? It is possible that it is bad and will cause a similar problem.

Hi all, I am new in this forum. I got my Sunfire/04 just now imported from USA. I have the impression that I also have a fuel problem. First I want to change the fuel filter. Simple question: WHERE can I find th filter. I searched in all places. Thanks for answers.

Re: No power to fuel pump
The filter is under the trunk between the rear tires.

Re: No power to fuel pump
The fuel pump relay is located in the power control center under the hood. Look on the back of the cover, it should indicate which one it is. It is plug and play, just pull it out ant put in another one. Get a good one from a dealer, don't rely on a cheap aftermarket one.

Re: No power to fuel pump
I found it and tested it and it seemed fine. I pulled a couple of other things and pluged them back in and the car started and ran. So I have no clue what happened but it is running. Thanks GTP Dad!!
Ok here's the same problem popping up again. It runs for 1 day and then nothing!! No whirring from the pump just clicking from the relay. This is begining to really bug me as I can usually fix most non-electrical problems. I NEED MORE HELP.!! Last edited by itzaboy; 09-11-2005 at 12:22 AM. |

Maybe by reseating those things you cleaned the contacts up a little which helped it out.

Re: No power to fuel pump
If you didn't replace the relay replace it with a new one first. Then check the ground to the fuel pump. It is possible that the ground is bad and not allowing it to work properly. You may also have a faulty Oil pressure sending unit. These will shut down the fuel pump if the oil pressure goes too low. It is usually located just over top of the oil filter and looks like a small roung can with a wire coming out the top.

Re: No power to fuel pump
Check the connections to the injectors, cps, throttle position sensor and especially the connections to the PCM. It sounds like you have an intermittant connection that is causing the whole problem. They are very hard to track down and may take a lot of time. Also check the connection where the wiring comes through the firewall.

Try you ignition switch
It may be your ignition switch that gets hot and cuts off the power remember that the power to your fuel pump starts there. U never know it could be something as simple as that
