Unhappy Cold Start Engine knock/tick (NEW ENGINE THOUGH)

00 civic si
JDM b16a
integ type r pistons
integ gsr cams

you'v all heard this many times before but lets try n give myself, being a newb, a chance..kinda intimidating on the forum, but i've been doing the search mode and have come across several sound/video clips (but they dont match my quality of engine knock)..also been reading posts but have a few questions that i havnt found answers too

first of all..bought the car about a month and a half ago...but realized there was a engine tick/knock/whatever almost a month ago..i dont know if its always been there or developed..i cant remember recognizing it the day after i bought it...

it only knocks when cold..doesnt knock when idle..but when i rev it does..and is worse around 2000 rpms..and goes away ocne the engine reaches normal temp..

this is a NEW engine..the valves were recently adjusted (few weeks ago)..but the knock is there...there are no oil leaks to my knowledge..and use mobil one synthetic...its due for an oil change at the end of this month...

the knock is like a clack clack clack..and isnt very consistent..if it IS a piston slap..it sounds as if it slaps on random revolutions..not on all and doesnt sinc with the revolutions of the revving (if that makes sense)

my questions are

1.) will a thicker oil tame the knock significantly while i find the problem? (im thinkin of doin an oil change this weekend just to see if it'll help)..

2.) has anyone experienced this before?

3.) is an oil test a good idea worth its money to get some kind of diagnosis?

4.) i once heard these engine knocks were normal..explaining..that the pistons just needed the time to expand and reach normal temperature and dialation...and that it didnt do further damage to the engine..could this be true

i'll try to get a sound clip up soon or a vid...

sorry for my newbness..just want some guidance

Re: Cold Start Engine knock/tick (NEW ENGINE THOUGH)

my engine knocks like that due to me overtightening the timing belt a tad bit.

belt still looks good though.

Re: Cold Start Engine knock/tick (NEW ENGINE THOUGH)

The exact thing happened to my car, it would always knock with an offbeat rythym for about a minute with it was cold, i changed the spark plug wires and this fixed it suprisingly well.

If thats not the case, then it could very well be the gas you use. I believe your engine only runs on premium fuel. If you are filling up on regular, switch to premium and keep it that way.
