Question Check Engine Light - '97 legacy

I recently bought a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited Wagon with a 2.5 L and auto trans. it has 120K miles.

i was occasionally experiencing a slight hesitation during acceleration so i added chevron with techron fuel additive to the last tank of gas to clean-out varnish and carbon deposits from the fuel system. about halfway thru that tank of gas the check engine light came on. i had autozone read the code and apparently their code reader indicated the catalytic converter has decreased efficiency.

the autozone employee that read the code for me recommended i run a tank of premium unleaded gasoline and add octane booster to help clean-out the deposits that have collected in my catalytic converter. will this work or is he full of it?!?!

replacing the converter is expensive so i don't want to do that unless its truly necessary.

You can try that but I doubt it will work. I put a hose up my tail pipe and washed it out. That helped alot.
