99 Rodeo, need new engine

I'm rather upset so I'll keep this quick.
I broke a rod in my engine, now I dont know that much about cars but the mechanic said I need a new engine and im not willing to spend the 5,000 he told me to.

I have a 99 isuzu rodeo, My question is what engines will work in this vehicle and where would be the best place to start looking. Any help would be a God Send. Thank You

-Ben

A broken connecting rod is not common in this engine. You probably have a spun (bad) #1 connecting rod bearing? This is usually caused by low oil level starvation. If you are just experiencing a knock at idle, it's possible it's just the hydraulic timing belt tensioner is bad. This is very common. 3.2L rebuild kits are avail on eBay, as are whole engines. $5K is high. $3-4K is possible.
G/luck
