ok. the way it sounds is that it might be the distributor. i had the same problem with my SVO a week after i bought it. turned out that the shaft was bent from all the hot rodding done by the previous owner. i had mine rebuilt and race preped for $125 by a friend at local speed shop.
try doing that and double check your timing. EDIT: i forgot. i have a 88 merkur distributor in my garage with only 600 miles on it. it should work with your car, just swap out the ignition module. i'd be willing to sell it to you for $75. i took it off a blown 2.5L stroker race motor.

Re: Mustang 2.3l
Then you must have a short. Try tracing your wires and look for anything wrong. ie bad connection, skinned coating, ect.

Re: Mustang 2.3l
Hey...it is a simple fix I believe. Change out the ignition switch and you should have the porblem fixed. If that does not work then I will tell you that ford is notorious for cutting into two wires running along the steering column and check the starter solenoid on the driver's fender. Let me know what you find out. And please do not get so upset, there are people out there still trying to help you.

Re: Mustang 2.3l
ignition switches were a problem for these years. already replaced mine twice, they loosen up and fall apart. ford also has a recall on them refer to this link: http://www.automotive.com/1989/49/fo...lls/24341.html. and by the symptoms you describe the ignition switch when replaced will end your headaches.

Re: Mustang 2.3l
Thanks mastemech, by holding the key in the start position i was able to drive my Mom's car to the Ford dealer. They put a new switch in for free cause of the recall you told me about. Her car runs fine now.Great advice I sure do appreciate it.mgbss63 I have an eec,eec power relay and 2 fuel pump relays that all work fine left over from trying to figure out what was wrong with her car . Ive got about $40 invested in these good used parts.Thank everyone for all the advice.
