Transmission Swap

Recently I swapped out my transmission in my stealth for a trans out of a Mitsubishi 3000gt, Or at least thats what I was told it was out of when I bought it. I installed it, ran into a few mystery problems that with help from other members to this forum I was able to fix.

So heres the new problem, I was informed that there is no compatibility differences between the Stealth trans. and the Mitsubishi trans. However, I've run into a problem with the CV Joints. The Outer Diamiter of the CV joint is smaller than the Inner Diamiter of the differential inside the 3000gt transmission, so when placed inside, it just rattles around, the CV joint doesn't engage at all.
I'm worried if I buy new CV Joints from a Mitsubishi ans swap it, I'll run into the same problem on the other end with the wheel bearing assemblies and everything that is incorporated on that end.

What can I do? Any suggestions?

I am guessing you have a 91-92? You most likely got a 93-99 tranny. They have larger axles. The axles are acutally the exact same as teh AWD front CV's. As for the hubs being different I am not 100% sure, but I beleive they are the same even with the difference in the axles.

Basically you are going to need axles from a 93-99 to make it work.

Yeah because the 3000gts and stealths are identical in every way except cosmetic... so im thinking you have the wrong generation. what year is you car and how many gears does the tranny have?
and if its a 92 be specific on when it was made... they changed alot of stuff at 92.5 and produce half of the 92s with much better stuff that the 2nd gens have also... so mabey you have a 92.5+

I ran into this problem just last week when I had my engine and tranny swapped out. My car is a 91 but the engine and trans are from a 92.5. The mechanic had to use the outer part of the original axles to match the hubs and get newer inside axles that match the output on the tranny. He said that the original axles and hubs were 21 splines and that the newer ones were 25 spline. Or at least thats how he explained it.

yeah the 92.5 is abslolutly the same as a 2nd gen sept its a 5 speed but it has the 2nd gen transfer case and output shaft.
92.5 is also when they put in the 4 bolt main, put in the stronger crank and ect...

Hes talking about the FWD axles, and has nothing to do with the transfercase. The 5 speed 25 Spline t-cases are not the same as the 2nd gen ones, they are very different.

But yes, it sounds like you have a 93+ trans and your car is a 91-92 so you have the smaller axels. All you need to do it pick up a set of 93+ axels and the FWD half shaft and swap them in.

Yes, my stealth is a 92, 5 speed, FWD, SOHC, non turbo. But as for if its a 92.5 or made in the first half of 92 I am unsure.
talskinyguy, when you refer to the "Half Shaft" what are you refering to? Is this just part of the complete CV joint assembly?
Ok, does anyone know what this is going to set me back for these new axles? I working on a vary limited budget. And if anyone knows of anywhere that would have the best price on them?

If your axles are too small for the holes in the trans then you have a pre 92.5 car and the trans is out of a 92.5+ car. The halfshaft is the part that bolts to the block and connects the drivers side axle to the trans.

Think you might be confused. The axles are actually half shafts. The part that bolts to the block and extends from the halfshaft to the tranny is the intermediate shaft. Those are the terms I have always known at least.

Also as for the differences in the trannys I beleive NA's only changed after the model year changed. So basically all 92's have the smaller half shafts and 93+ have the larger diameter ones.

Perfect, hopefully by mid month I'll actually be able to drive it, I've had this car for getting clost to a year now and have only been able to hear the engine run. So its will be so nice to be able to get out and show it off. Just in time to the gas to go through the roof.

yes, cause although I'm mechanicly compitent, (well to an extent) I don't know that name of every part so am easily confused.
I do appreciate all the help, this project has taken far to long and I'd be stuck if not for everyones help on this forum.
