modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
Ok, since I could only ask one question in a poll, I'm gonna try something a little different. Above are a list of common mods, Please vote only for mods that you believe are worth the money, leave all others be!
thanks.

Re: modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
One thing to think about on the Single In - Dual Out Exhaust is that the restriction point, Single In Pipe, must be larger than the stock pipe to obtain a gain of measureable amounts. And the engine can handle more air, turbo/Supercharge/blower, before it will require bigger exhaust. Cold Air Intake will not justify the modification. Read this post over half way down. Don't get me wrong, better flowing if it headers or pipes is better but proper sized will do better.

I have evidence that upping the octane in my truck did ZERO for improved MPG. One time, I did it, and saw a +2 MPG gain, but I must have been driving like grandma for that tank. Here are my numbers since May, with notes, when applicable.

I hate to say this, but it almost looks like anything you changed didn't have much of an effect on your miledge, unless as you added performmance items to improve it, you got worse with your driving habits.

The tune did, about ~1.2 MPG. This graphic illustrates it more clearly. The tune, however was the only thing I've done with the purpose of improved MPG (that's how I got the wife's approval)

Re: modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
did jethro say that an engine has to have some form of forced induction in order to benefit from a free flowing exhaust? i think he did. thats not true at all. he is correct in pointing out that a freer flowing intake doesnt necessarily require an exhaust also, but to say that unless an engine is supercharged it doesnt need a good exhaust is stupid. and a cold air intakes primary purpose is to put colder air into the engine, not necessarily more air, tho that will happen with a less restrictive filter. the best places to start on any buildup of any kind are the intake, exhaust, and ignition system. and as far as descreening the maf sensor, its free, so its obviously worth the money. take one look at the screen and tell me that its not restricting airflow. its a virtually useless piece of equipment. i dont have any hard numbers to show as far as an improvement, but i figure if i can actually hear more air moving, the engine must feel it. and someone needs to check out this whole reply screen cuz everytime i try to put something in italics it sends me back to the af homepage.

Re: modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
I am new to the 21st century truck world. I just retired my 1977 F150 and bought an 01 SIlverado. WHat the heck is a screen and where is it restricting my air?!?

Just out of the air filter box, 1" - 2", there is a sensor that has wires going in and out of it.

Re: modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
i didnt say i took the screen out just to hear the air haha. i said after i took it out i could hear it, and that if there is actually an audible change in the intake flow than there is definitely more air getting into the engine. sorry i cant actually calculate how many more CFM the sensor is flowing now. i can only tell u what i hear. the reason they put the screen in was to keep things from hitting the tiny wires in the MAF sensor. as long as there is an air filter on the vehicle the odds of something getting in there r very slim, so im not so worried about it. and i agree, u can put a lot more air into the engine without actually requiring a better exhaust, but thats not to say that a vehicle wont benefit from one anyway. sorry that people who dont know much about this stuff have to hear us argue about it and get all confused. there r always gonna be differences in opinion as far as what mods r worth the money. there r plenty of people that wont even mod their vehicles at all. my advice would be to talk to someone like slopro that run 12s wit their trucks and theyll tell u whats worth the time and money.

I agree with the intake exhaust but I don't understand the MAF screen theory. I am not right or correct by an means, there is always something to learn everyday....

Re: modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
I've also heard the screen helps to keep the air flow over the sensors even. I asked awhile back about removing the screen. Those who hadn't said don't and those who said they had saw no improvement and also said no don't do it. Can that many people be wrong??? (Don't answer that!!!)

Re: modding Poll: good, bad, indifferent.... Take Two.
well, even with 19 votes so far, the poll looks to be reflecting what I have read in many previous posts. Which is a good thing. Cold air intake and a tune are in the lead. Thanks for the votes everyone.
