2005 Shannons Eastern Creek Classic (56K beware)

August 27th and 28th, at the Eastern Creek race track in the Sydney area, Shannons (a classic car insurance place) put on the 2005 Shannons Eastern Creek Classic. The 27th was mainly a small track day (which I went to watch some of, and took some photos of), but the 28th was a HUGE car show, with approximately 1600 cars on show (my Rover being one of them ). All cars on display were part of clubs, and clubs could allocate a certain number of spaces for cars. As a special treat, each club got a chance to do a lap and a half of the track (used for many things, but primarily Aussie V8 Supercars) - no overtaking allowed but the pace car went as fast as the club wanted, and individual cars could space themselves far from others to speed up for any sections The old Rover certainly isn't the greatest track day car (UNDERSTEER!!), but I had a ball out on the track, and even took the old girl up to 140kph on the approach to one of the turns (madness! )!

Anyways, on to the photos. Feel free to check out my whole 300+ photo gallery (in 1024x768) at http://www.mbrown.ca/gallery.

The classic car traffic jam! They weren't all too organized in getting cars in, and classic cars jammed in with other classic cars, not moving, on a hot day = lots of steaming engines! Fortunately we were moving enough that it wasn't much of a worry for most of the cars.

Nevertheless, we eventually got in and parked, and I had a look around. Took loads of photos but will only show some highlights here.

Lots of cool old Japanese cars I'd never even heard of before, let alone seen! For example, check out this old Mazda 1000 Coupé

Lots of old American stuff too, like this Studebaker Hawk (I believe this supercharged version was once the fastest American car? or American 4-seat car? something like that)

My favorite year Mustang! 1969!

Alfa Romeo 1600 Zagato!

This was an Australian-produced "Buckle", one of only 21 built, and one of two at the event.

By noon, it was the time for the historic single-seat race cars to go around the track, and they WERE allowed to overtake, and ran without a pace car! A truly awesome sight. Here is a Brabham Formula 2 car leaving the pits and heading out onto the track...

...and a '30s Plymouth Special blasting around...

As they were finishing their 15 minutes on the track, and the bigger historic race cars were getting set to go, I ran back to the Rover to grab more camera batteries, then went off to go stand by a hairpin turn I'd discovered the day before. While I was up by the Rover, though, I grabbed a quick photo of these JZRs (or "Jizzers" ). Basically the guy that started the company loved the old three-wheeler Morgans (which these are replicas of), but wanted to update them. These feature adjustable coil-over suspension, cross-drilled disc brakes, and Honda V4 bike motors + sequential gearbox! I want one!!

Out in the parking "lot" I was walking through to get to the particular corner on the track, I noted this exceptional Lamborghini Urraco...

Ford Falcon (front) and Holden Torana dukin' it out...

A Datsun Bluebird (510) getting a little "out of shape" in front of a Mk I Ford Escort and a Morgan...

Funny little Austin A35

The aforementioned Mk I Escort...

A kick-ass old Pontiac Parisienne...

...beside a kick-ass old Pontiac Firebird!

A gorgeous (and rare!) Aston Martin DB4 Vantage Drophead

An ever-stylish Mercedes-Benz "Pagoda" SL

A rare twin-turbo V8 Maserati Shamal

Aston Martin DB4 and DB6

A cool old Sedanca Bentley...this car was up for sale by the previous owner back in 1998 for +$400,000....

There were several little Messerschmitts on show

A 1912 Triumph bike! It was hilarious watching this thing in action - it would have about 1 power stroke per second, each launching a huge puff of smoke out of the exhaust and lifting the whole bike! Reminded me of old "jalopies" on cartoons that go "puff puff puff puff" and hop along the road

Crazy Aussies.....

A rad old Nissan Skyline

The oh-so-cool Lancia Fulvia

A gorgeous Volvo 1800S

An Australian Bolwell Nagari

Now this is cool enough, an absolutely immaculate old Toyota Corona coupe...

...but it's way cooler still with blacktop 20V power!

A lovely and rare FIAT 2300S

An excellent example of a Porsche from back when Porsches were actually cool

My chance to drive 'round the track! Those damned Jags never stood a chance (photo courtesy my friend Mike, riding shotgun)

Super-cool Isuzu Bellett 1600GT, Gran Turismo 4 style

My Rover beside my friend's Mk I Mini Cooper S - which he let me drive around the track...FUNNNNNNNN!!!

Thanks for viewing
