Gas additives
I have a '99 5.3 C 1500 I recently purchased with 83k miles. I add 8 0z. of 100% acetone from HD with each tankfull of regular. I'm getting over 20 mpg around town and about 26 on the Interstate. Whadaya think?

Re: Gas additives
I've heard of somme additivews being bad for the materials in the fuel system and can cause some damage. But then if I'm wrong on this one, at least it'll clean the finger nail polish out of the injectors!!!

Re: Gas additives
Yup...the same thing was happening in '80 when they first came out with gasahol. It was eating at certain parts of the carberators. They stated using materials that could stand up to the alcohol at about that time. I suppose that if the acetone thing catches on, they can do the same thing.

i would steer clear of it myself. sounds like to many risks involved from what i read on it. i looked into it a while back and looked really bad for the motor, especially on my nice truck. if i had a cheap work car i would try it and see what happens but i dont.

Re: Gas additives
There has actually been quite a bit of discussion on acetone on this forum in the last 6 months or more. For me - I'll not put it in my tank - if you've used Acetone in other activities - you'll quickly notice how it "cleans" surfaces - it strips off oil, lubricants, etc.. It is a great cleaner - but "it goes to metal" so much - that I wouldn't want it around my metal or around rubber parts. Everyone needs to do their own thing

Re: Gas additives
I experienced near 25% gain from Berryman's B-12 additive, and I noticed that it contains Methanol, acetone and a bunch of other good stuff like that. From what I can tell from articles and such, in small amounts it helps atomize the fuel at the injectors. I dont think I would add straight acetone to my gas though
![]() PS The good thing is that B-12 costs only $2.39 for 15 oz. (2 cans per tank = $5) |

Re: Gas additives
From what I read, you only add 5 oz to your full 25 gallon tank...thats not hardley enough to hurt anything cosidering how much the fuel will dilute it. I'm thinking about trying it and seeing whats up with it on my trip to Statesboro this weekend.

Re: Gas additives
Actually Berryman's B-12 and the SEA-FOAM (c) brand recommend about 1oz. per gallon. So 2 cans treats 30 gallons. (In my case 25gallons). I tallied up my MPG today after a fill up, and I had 16.7MPG this last tank on 87 octane with 2 cans B-12, which is up from 13.7MPG with no additive.
NOt bad eh?? EDIT: I just realized you were referring to acetone. You are braver than me!! |

Re: Gas additives
I've read some more on it now, and I'm trying it if I can find the acetone. I'm going to add 3 or 4 ounces to a fresh full tank of gas before I leave Thursday afternoon. If it braks something, hell, I'll be stranded in the same town that my g/f is in right now....I can't lose.

Re: Gas additives
I've ran several different mixtures in in numerous tanks of gas. The most beneficial being 6oz in 26 gallons of gas. My normal pure 87 octane would get me about 325 miles, with the acetone mix it got me around 340-350. Whoopidy doo!!! I have tried close to 25 tank fulls and have had zero adverse effects but then alsom IMO no MPG increase to wanna bother with it anymore. I have been told it will do little more than nothing to fuel injected vehicles. However a buddy of mine has and old K30 blazer and he claims he get an extra 75 miles out of his tank while acetone. But all in all i'd say no additive will give enough extra miles to make it worth while.

Re: Gas additives
I had a small bottle of it at my house I found last night, so I'm trying it. I already have it measured and waiting for the trip.
