where is the warning chime/beeper?

i really like to be able to listen to my radio with the engine off and the doors open. however, as you all probably know, the escort sets off the warning chime when the key is in the car and the doors are open.

i dont want to permanently disable the chime. id like to find it and put a switch in series so i can turn the chime off under the aforementioned circumstances.

any ideas? which body panels to take off? what it looks like? where it is? whether it is an individual part, or whether it is part of a circuit board that would make this idea impractical?

if this idea won't work, could i just put a switch on the 'room' fuse? my manual says this fuse controls the chime. it also says it controls the radio, but there is another fuse marked 'radio' which is also noted as controlling the radio.

any reasons not to toggle the 'room' fuse on and off? it controls some various engine control functions, if i recall correctly, but these shoudlnt matter if the car is off, eh?

many thanks,
anthony

Re: where is the warning chime/beeper?

there was a past post about this. Im not too sure what its called but just look back on the last couple of pages.

I cant remember the exact details but you have to remove the back cover before the steering wheel. Where your turn signal is. Take off the black cover on the key cylinder and its the black wire.
Again Im not 100% sure but look back I sure its there.

thanks, i looked back a half dozen pages and found the post i believe you were referring to.

one question- this mod seems to be referring to the ignition warning chime. is ignition switch what's back there? or the actual chime device? i want to be able to switch off the chime for the ignition, door open, lights on, etc.

is the actual beeper under the wheel cover panel?

thanks,
anthony

im sorry- im a little slow. which is the same one? what do you mean?

i pulled the cover panels off a handful of things in my car today. the beeper device seems to be in a small cream-colored box that looks like it is attached in some clip-like way to the back of the bigger cream colored box to which the fuses are attached (97 escort).

i coudlnt get the beeper box off, with a little wrestling, nor could i get the whole assembly off. i took the lower bolt off but it is attached in some way at the top and i dont want to force it.

so- my car is covered with little bits and pieces and im no better off.

escort_service: are you saying that if you clip the ignition beeper wire, then none of those chimes will sound? (doors, lights, key in ignition)

if so- how on earth do you get the steering wheel covers off? i pulled the screws, and they become loose, but seem attached at the steering wheel in some way. i am assuming you dont actually have to remove the steering wheel just to take those panels off.

thanks,
anthony

Re: where is the warning chime/beeper?

the beeper you refer to is the same for all warrnings. Including your door, ignition, lights and what ever else.
In order to take of the steering wheel cover there will be two swrews from the battem of the casing. Take them off then you will be able to see the key cylinder.

Re: Re: where is the warning chime/beeper?

well I had a 93 and I removed a little tan box about 4''/2''/1' l/w/d. where the clutch pedal would be to the left(towards the door) has a plug going into it. its by all the wires and such down by your feet. took care of it for me, if you can find a way to put a switch into that, or just locate it and take it out when you want.

i figured it out. on my 97, there are two white (with red stripe) wires running to the ignition cylinder. i installed a switch in that run, and mounted it on the paneling by the wheel. now i have a switch to turn off the door alarms, as wanted.

thanks, folks.
