Re: turbo & super charger
a turbo uses exhaust gases to drive a turbine, that has a rod connectining it to a compressor, that sucks in air an forces it into the engine at high pressure, a supercharger uses a belt driven off the crank to turn a screw/centrifugal compressor to force air into the engine.
but first, go look in the forced induction forum, that will explain everything in detail.

A turbo IS a supercharger.
A long time ago, turbos were called turbo-superchargers. The nomenclature was put there to distinguish between a exhaust turbine driven centrifugal compressor, and a crank or camshaft driven centrifugal/ positive displacement compressor. Nowadays, in "street" talk (verbage of the proles), it seems to go something like this: **Turbos-- as I explained above. **Superchargers--crank driven centrifugal compressors. **Blowers-- crank driven positive displacement...uhh... air movers. Air isn't compressed inside the unit so they are not as efficient as centrifugal compressors. Turbos have had the edge in professional racing (when they are allowed) since the late sixties. They can have a much wider usable powerband than a crank driven centrifugal supercharger, and are more efficient than a blower. Drag racing is the exception here, but that is of concern only to the worker bees in the "under classes" (sniff). |

i think that before one can be allowed to post on here they should be required to follow a link to www.howstuffworks.com
i have learned a whole lot of stuff there and it is a valuable tool for anyone beginning to be interested in, well, just about anything.

At the top of this forum there was a convinient little section about Turbo vs. Supercharges. Inside there is all sorts of good info....READ!!
