Getting better gas mileage

With the recent rise in gas prices just wanted to start a post on how to increase gas mileage on Honda civic or hondas in general.

I know a cold air intake helps a bit. How much does it really help?

Fuel additives. Anyone know of some good ones that actually work?

Oil additives. Same here, any one have any luck with these?

Any other ideas to boost your miles per gallon.

I try to keep the RPMs down as much as I can, is this acually getting worse gas milage because I got to give the car more gas to move.

Re: Getting better gas mileage

the honda manual says to stay in the highst gear that you can accelerate smoothly.
i assume that this means if you are trying acceleration in 5th gear at 10 mph., you will loose gas mileage

make sure tire pressure is correct, check air filter for dirt -- clean if necessary, read the manual for shift points.

I also like to run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through my fuel system every now and then... seems to make her a little more responsive.

Also, if you're driving an EX, 28 in city would be about right.... I drive a DX, and I get about 30 in city... could be due to my higher transmission gearing.

Also, what octane rating gas are you using? I was using 93 for the longest, then when the prices shot up, I did a milage test to see how much my milage dropped while using 87... and I actually GAINED 2 miles per gallon on 87 octane than on 93.... 93 I was averaging 32mpg, but now on 87 I'm averaging 35mpg.

Re: Getting better gas mileage

i use the 87 octane, every once in a lpong while i fill up with 92 or 93.
surprisingly the 87 octane is better for our cars. there were made to run on cheap fuel. but once you mess with the timeing or go woth FI you would need the higher octane (why the hell am i telliny you this, i am sure you already know)

I have always been affraid of any type of fule addative, dont know why. anyway, what type of fuel injector cleaner would you suggest.

Re: Getting better gas mileage

Dealers specifically say you will get better milage out of the car using 87.

I just use a 8oz bottle of STP injector cleaner... is in a red bottle. Put it in before you fill your tank.... that is all.

Re: Getting better gas mileage

Anyone use any oil additives, I heard that this one called friction 3000, adds 5-10 mpg, adds to overall performace, and makes engine last longer. It basicly is a concentrated synthetic lube that makes everything run smoothly. Anyone have any luck with something along these lines?

Crap like that wont do any more for your engine than changing your oil regularly will do...

Even better if you over inflate them a little. For example: the sticker on my door jam it says something like 31 front & 29 psi rear or something like that I don’t remember exactly right now. Anyway, my tire side wall says max press of 35psi & that’s what I’ll inflate to. Sometimes a little bit more. By doing this you decrease rolling resistance. The bad part is that it’ll give you a little bit of a hard ride as well as the fact that it you increase tire wear & the tendency to hydroplane. But it does help with the mileage a little.

Oh, oil additives don’t work! They just take your $.
