5.0 & a 1969 Z28

I had just gotten off the highway onto this 2 lane road on a saturday afternoon cruise (this happened last saturday), with the windows down in the 5.0 with my bro, when all the sudden, on the right side of the road waiting to pull onto the main road, i see this unbalievably, insanely kickass blue 69' z28 with black stripes on it, glistening in the sun.
Now, i dont know if it was me, the sun shining off of it, or something els, but this car looked totaky bad ass and awesome, and as i drive by, admiring how kickass it was, all the sudden the entire car shifts itself, as if trying not to expload from a power surge or something, and the air lit up with this monstrouse roar as he reved the engine, challenging us as we passed.
I instantly knew he wanted to race, and as he pulled onto the road and started gaining speed, i started getting more and more excited. I didnt care if i won or lost at that point, all i cared about was racing one of my fovorite Muscle cars of all time but as he reached the rear of my car, the competitavenes in me started to wake up, and i dropped it down into drive, waiting for the car in the oncomming lane to pass so we would have a nice open stretch of road.
As soon as the car passed, I saw in my rearveiw mirror the z28 pull into the other lane and slowly start to slow down a little so matched his speed (about 30 mph on a 55mph road) and he started honking, so on the third honk we both floor it. At first, we stayed pretty even, with me pulling ahead slowly but he lost a little ground every time he shifted too (whereas i have an AOD trans) so I was a good 2-3.5 car lengths ahead by the time we reached 120mph or so, where i shut it down and dropped down to about 55.
After that, he pulled into the right lane and pulled off onto a different road.

Its too bad he didnt stay on the same road to race again or at least pull off somewhere so we could talk a bit.

Nice win! I concur 69 Camaros are bad-freakin-ass! Though I may be bias, you'd have to be retarded or some import-faithful dick to not like them. Though an SS would be a more fitting race, seeing as the Z28 was a road racing-targeted model, that's still freakin awesome!!! I got my ass dusted by a 454 Chevelle SS, and it felt good!

Don't really respect them either, but thats another argument for another thread. [/hijcak]

Outa curiosity...what kinda times does a older Z28 run, and what times does your 5.0 run?

I think the Old Z cars had a 350 horse 350 in them..... so probabaly low to mid 14's stock.... I'm not 100% if the engine in those is the 350 horse or the 325 though, but it shoudl be good for mid 14's or so.... I don't like the Z28's that much.... The RS's with the 327 were mean, they came with 325 horse and the stock 327 bottom end could see almost 8000 rpm... but the best camaro of that era is the Balwin Motion Camaro's with the ZL1 427, thats a mean car.

I think they're pretty cool..

But cars with arbitrary steering wheels arent my gig.

Unpublicized and unknown by most of the buying public (and most Chevrolet sales people for that matter) and not mentioned in any sales literature, the only way someone could order the Z-28 package was to order a base Camaro with the Z-28 option, mandatory front disc brakes with power assist, and the Muncie 4-speed transmission. You could not order the SS package, automatic transmission, air conditioning, or the convertible. What you got was a unique 302 cid small block (Non-California emission cars were labeled MO while California emission engines were labeled MP) that was created by taking the 327 block and installing the short-stroke 283 crank. Specifically designed to compete in the Club of America Trans Am racing series which placed a 305 cid limit on its entries, the Z-28 was available to the public solely to qualify the car for racing. Advertised horsepower was listed at just 290bhp, which was not very impressive until one hooked it up to a dyno and got actual readings of 360-400 bhp. The Z-28 also came with a competition suspension, broad racing stripes on the hood and trunklid and could be combined with the RS option package. There was no Z-28 badging at all, lest it attract to much attention. The Z-28 proved to be difficult to launch on the street because its high reving engine was lethargic under 4000rpm and worked best when it was shifted at 7500rpm (!). Once it got going, the Z28 was tough to beat and boosted a 140mph top speed and numerous racing victories. Only 602 Z-28s were sold in 1967, making it a truly desirable collectable.
Now, if it was a true Z28 in good tune. I think you'd have a hard race ahead of you.

Lots of folks buy the Z28 Badges and slap them on. Although, lots of Camaros came with stripes, even non-Z28s. And again, lots of people add those on later. Cause they do look badass on a 1st Gen. Especially a '69 with it's buldging rear fenders.

Yeah, they did...

I only posted an article about the '67 Camaro Z28. Unless you folks wanted to read 3 pages worth of info all 3 years.

Heaven forbid someone should respect one of the cars that helped pave the way for hot rodders and gear heads and made the aftermarket what it is today...geeze guys...

Edit: Nice race
