Syphoning gas

Just so you know, I'm not asking so I can steal gas, this is a real question. My family's 88 Oldsmobile Calais just died, not worth fixing. Problem is, my dad put $27 worth of gas into the tank right before it died. With gas prices so high and rising, we want to get that gas out of there and into one of our other cars. We've tried to do it already, we know how to. The problem is after the hose gets a certain distance, it feels like its being stopped by something. My dad looked online and couldnt find any saftey device on the tank that would prevent syphoning. We know its not that its in the tank and getting stopped because we can't get any gas out at all. I know this isn't a Grand Prix question, but you guys always respond fairly quickly and have pretty good answers, so I figured I'd see if you guys have any ideas.

Re: Syphoning gas

The newer tanks are hard to get a hose in to siphon gas out of. No safety device but where they connect they sometimes make a turn that will not allow a hose to go into the tank. If you are going to junk the car anyway why don't you jack the car up and use a hand drill to put a hole in the tank to drain it or remove the tank, take the pump out and then remove the gas.

Re: Syphoning gas

i sure wouldnt be drilling into a metal gas tank. Its an 1988 vehicle so you should be able to get that hose downthru there. keep twisting and rotating it. if not pull tank and siphon the gas where you removed the pickup tubes.

Re: Syphoning gas

the fuel filler tube on your car is about 6ft long, and makes about 5 turns making it very difficult to get a hose down. What I would do is jack up the back of the car, remove the rubber filler hose where it connects to the tank, then put your siphon tube in there. You should have no trouble getting the gas out that way.
