Best Intrigue info poll:
Who/what has the best reference material for the Intrigue?
1. Forums. Like automotiveforums.com (free) 2. GM/Helm service manual ($80-120) 3. Alldatadiy.com ($25 a year) my personal fave, but it get's costly after the first year. If you can't win the service manual on Ebay (and don't want to pay $120 new) it's perfect for the person in a bind for info. Sometimes more up to date info than a service manual. 4. Other service manuals like Haynes/Clymer etc. ($25 usually) 5. eSI/Techline on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GM-eS...96179123QQrdZ1 This turns your computer into a service station with all the GM service manuals from 1996-2005 in electronic format. Some older years can be found cheaper than others. Some can be used to program the PCM I think? The new eSI/Techline DVDs are on sale for $400 from GM. Otherwise they used to be at least 2x that. I think you can also get it for $120 a month. Mostly for dealers/servicers. 6. GM electronic manual set 1980-2003. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1980-...96530881QQrdZ1 I've seen these for $40 (and they weren't copies like this one), but originally I think they were $120-$200 from GM. Has the manual set from 1996-2003. With sporadic coverage of pre-1996. |

Re: Best Intrigue info poll:
I vote for Helms/GM service manuals. Got mine on Ebay - around $35.00 with winning bid.
Plus its nice to have a hardcopy to read in bed or on the John of your home or office while getting ready to perform or study up on car maintenance. ![]()

Re: Re: Best Intrigue info poll:
I'm lazy, but also cheap. (Remember I left that faulty CKP sensor in for a year)
AlldataDiy.com is $15 a year to renew ( And I need to renew in another month). $25 a year for new people. I can get the whole GM/Helm 1996 + > set on CD or DVD for $50 or so. It looks like (an older) eSI or the 1980-2003 Manual set for me. I tried getting a GM manual set on Ebay, but it kept going up to $60-80-100 for the 1999 Intrigue one (has 3.8L and 3.5L info). That was 2 years ago when I gave up on that. |

Re: Best Intrigue info poll:
I have a set of GM/Helm service manuals for my 2001 Intrigue. I think this is the best reference, my biggest complaint however is locating the particular info I want. The index sucks, to put it bluntly. For example, all the following are in the manual, but not in the index (or hidden in a subcategory of something else): air cleaner, cabin air filter, camshaft positioner sensor, crankshaft positioner sensor, fuel filter, fuel tank, ignition coils, oil filter, and the list goes on. I’ve spent many hours adding items to the index.
Alldatadiy.com is excellent. I had access to Alldatadiy while taking an auto shop class in junior college and from what I saw, the Alldatadiy pages were identical to my Helm service manual. The big advantage of Alldatadiy is the easier ability to locate info. However, once I located it in Alldatadiy I usually found the corresponding page in my service manual and used the service manual (and added another entry to the service manual index). I also have the Chilton’s #28380 manual covering GM “W” body cars including Intrigue, and for the limited information it contains, it is excellent in that it has many useful home mechanics tips not found in the factory manual. I’ve never been a fan of Chilton’s manuals in the past (much preferring Haynes), but I rate this Chilton’s quite high. I purchased two Intrigue “service manual” CDs on EBAY, one was by Mitchell that I considered worthless (plus it did not cleanly install and I could never uninstall it completely) and the other was a service manual CD that claimed it covered all GM cars (I don’t recall the name), but again it gave multiple errors during installation and always required the CD when using, and was not as good as the Helm manual, so I did the best I could to remove it. I looked at the eSI/Techline you referenced on EBAY and it looks quite promising. Also has some positive EBAY feedback from buyers. Has anyone purchased this and were you able to get a clean install on a Windows XP machine? Also, can you install the cds/dvds completely without having to install them in the drive each time you use them? I don’t have such a good feeling for the other EBAY listing for “GM electronic manual set 1980 – 2003.” 11 people had purchased a prior listing of this CD set and not one has left any feedback yet. The prior listing said “I still have a few of these left” and sold 11 and had 7 remaining. Then he relisted and as of this writing had sold 4 and had 12 remaining. So much for “I still have a few of these left.” My ideal computer manual so far is only a dream. That manual would have hyperlinks to everything. i.e. if you see an item on a schematic such as a connector, you should be able to click on the connector and get a link to a picture of the connector and exactly where on the car the connector is located. Or if you see a picture of a component such as an alternator, you should be able to click on it and get the R&R instructions as well as the corresponding wiring schematic.

Re: Best Intrigue info poll:
I usually use forums, either this one or at www.modernolds.net
As far as manuals go, I use Haynes or Chiltons, but I don't have a service manual for the Intrigue.

Re: Best Intrigue info poll:
I also have the Helm (Factory) manual. It is probably the most detailed of what I've seen so far. It has about 1000 pages just on the 3.5 L engine. I bought mine new, and it was pricey - $135. If you're gonna do a lot of your own work, I'd recommend it.
I'm also thinking about getting the Alldata too. Mainly because of the TSB's and other documents. One question to Panzer - Does Alldata provide a complete set of TSB's for the Intrigue - does it update as new ones come out? |

Re: Best Intrigue info poll:
I bought the esi/techline cd set (~$35) and it's kind of weird. It turns your computer into a server that talks to itself. You need to connect it to the internet (need internet connection) so it can talk back to your computer as a server. I got it to go for a day or two then gave up. When it worked it was neat and very useful.
If you want to try it, get the DVD version so you don't need to keep swap-ing cds. I would try it on an extra computer and use it as a stand alone. The people that are selling these cd are just selling unauthorized copies that they make themselves (my thoughts on the matter). I'll even pass this thing around if people want to try it.
