94 camry wont start
My 94 camry was running fine until yesterday. This morning the car wont start. I dont hear any crank or anything.
I have been reading lots of posts and they say the battery might be dead, but i have a maintenace free battery. How would it die overnight? The power locking isnt working either. Any "power" device isnt working. Anything else i should look into? Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: 94 camry wont start
Batteries die overnight because there is a short or electrical drain on them. They also eventually die if they are not being fully recharged by the alternator. Have you modified anything electrical or added a do it yourself radio system?

Same thing happened with my daughters 94 XLE. Naturally, I started thinking worst case senairo. But first I removed and cleaned the battery terminals and battery cable connections (including ground connection to the frame). They didn't even look bad to me. But guess what........ the engine started right up. Hope this helps you.

Re: 94 camry wont start
You can check this easily if you have a DVM. Set the scale to 20 Volts DC and put the leads on the battery posts themselves. By battery posts, I mean the round posts of the battery itself; not the terminal ends of the battery cables. You should have around 12-1/4 volts if the battery is fully charged. Record the reading. Now check the reading through the battery cable terminals attached at the battery. If you have no reading or a much lower reading you have some type of corrosive build-up between the the battery and the cable terminals. Clean everything up like GSS123 sugested and the car should start. You can use a battery cable/terminal cleaner available at most auto parts stores for a few dollars or even a wire brush if one is handy.

Re: 94 camry wont start
Battery failure from "old age" can be exactly like this. I recall a time when I drove to a store, spent about 15 minutes shopping, and when I came out the battery was dead. (And tested dead too).
"Maintenenace free" just means you don't have to add distilled water periodically. All car batteries have been "mainteance free" for decades. |

Clean the battery terminals regardless of how they look.
Replace the batt.

Re: 94 camry wont start
My sons 1994 XLE Camry did the same thing and the electric antenna broke its cable that raises and lowers the antenna and it ran all night and ran the battery completely down. Just something to check. Good luck
