Angry Escape Air Vent Smell

I have a 2002 Ford Escape with a chronic mildew-like smell from the air vents every summer since new. Dealer is unable to locate the source of the problem and Ford refuses to help. Very furstrating!

Has anyone else experienced anything similar with their Escape or Tribute?

Re: Escape Air Vent Smell

Two different Ford dealers have deodorizing the system multiple times, recoated the condensor plate twice and replaced it once, checked drain pipes etc. etc.

No harm in trying this myself I guess. Thx for reply.

Re: Escape Air Vent Smell

I have found running the defroster on High/Hot for fifteen to twenty minutes on a hot day kills whatever mildew that formed from the cool/dampness of the air conditioner.

Re: Escape Air Vent Smell

At the dealership we just de-oderized them and used a foaming cleaner that was supposed to kill the mold/bacteria/gnomes living on the evaporator. Then we ran the things for a hour with the defrosters and heat cranked to dry the heater box like the Sahara. We didn't fix all of them, but that did it for most. Alsom make sure you don't actually have something dead in your car...it sounds stupid but you'd be amazed what mechanics find.

The cabin filter is located under the right side air intake cover. You will need to remove the front right cowl cover just below the windshield. Then open the hood and remove the cabin air intake cover and then you will see the cabin filter if there is one. I added the filter to my escape as id did not come with one when I bought it.
