powertrain computer module PCM
I would appreciate any advise anybody can give me concerning an Aurora PCM (powertrain control module). My 1997 Aurora was diagnosed as having a bad PCM. The bill for replacing this is about $800 (450 PCM 350 Labor). Is this difficult to replace? Where is the PCM located? Any specific procedure for replacing and starting up the car after replacement? Would it be possible to get a used PCM instead of buying a new one? Anybody have a used one they would sell me. Are there specific years that will work or can I only get a 1997 PCM.
Thanks for any input you can give me. Regards, Wes |

Re: powertrain computer module PCM
Last summer when my dealer replaced mine trying to fix my transmission shifting problems it was just over $500. After I got home and read the warrenty I found out it should still be UNDER warrenty I called my dealer back and was refunded my money! I think $800 is way high.

Re: powertrain computer module PCM
The PCM is programmed to your vehicle. There is a part number on your old PCM, if you go to a salvage yard, you will need to get the same part number.
Once you get your PCM, it will have to be programmed to your vehicle.

Re: powertrain computer module PCM
Thank you both for this information. Can you tell me where the PCM is located so I can get the part number. Will the car run if I install a new unit so I can drive it to a dealer to get reprogrammed. Otherwise it seems my only choice is to have a dealer do this work.

Quote:
The engine will not start until the PCM is programmed. Now understand one thing, If someone brings me their car and tells me to program the PCM or replace the PCM, I would be hesitant to do it because I have no idea why the PCM was being replaced or programmed. The customer would have to waive my liability to anything other than the proper installation and programming of the componant. The reason for this is the fact that I did not diagnose the vehicle and do not know if the repairs the customer wanted me to perform will correct the original condition. So don't get mad at the dealer when they replace or reprogram your PCM and that doesn't fix the concern...remember they just did what you asked them to do.

Re: powertrain computer module PCM
I agree, I will take it back to the dealer and have them guarantee me that it will fix the problem. Good advice, I will take it.
