1999 Rear Wiper not working

The rear wiper on my 99 XLT is not working. The motor doesn't make a peep and I have gone and bought two separate motors at O'Reilly and Advance and neither of them worked when plugged in. Checked the fuses in the fuse panel in the side of the dash and no problems. Checked the fuses and relays under the hood and no problems. Checked continuity and resistance in the 3-spd switch in the dash and no problems. Checked continuity of the ground at the rear connector where the wiper motor connector plugs in and no problems. Checked the wiper disable switch on the rear glass latch and no problems with it. Checked for power to the rear connector that plugs into the motor's connector and no problems. Not sure what the deal is. The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual shows 2 additional wires (in addition to the 4 actually connected to it) coming from the GEM to the wiper motor, however, there is no connector for these 2 wires and the 2 prongs on the motor show no signs of ever having used these 2 additonal connections. I'm guessing the Haynes manual's "1995-2001 rear wiper diagram" is incorrect. Anyone have any suggestions? Could it be the GEM? If so, where is it located? Is it the module above the left rear wheel well accessible from the rear storage area? I'm at a loss here given that power is getting to the connector in the rear of the vehicle yet none of the motors have worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Mark

Re: 1999 Rear Wiper not working

Your rear hatch must be closed as well as the hatch glass: I think as long as you do not show a door ajar light you are ok on that.

There are two rear wiper relays under the hood, an up relay and a down relay. Those relays are the same as many other relays there, so you can swap around. Check your manual for locations.

NO manual? Go to motorcraft.com, click on technical resourxes, find and click on owner information, and then select your vehicle and download it.

Thank you for the reply. I was aware that the rear glass must be closed and as I mentioned in my prior email, I even checked that the wiper disable switch was working properly. Although I kept the liftgate and glass closed during testing, I am not aware of any disabling switch that engages when the liftgate is open. Where is this switch located? My wiring diagrams do not show a second disabling switch other than the one located at the rear glass latch.

I am aware that there are 2 relays (up and down) under the hood and already checked those to be sure that they are working properly.

I'm not sure why you mentioned the manual, as I have both the Ford Owner's Manual and the Haynes Service Manual.

Still wondering where the G.E.M. is located in the vehicle as the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual shows the up and down park sensors going from the rear wiper motor to the G.E.M.. Of course, the factory rear wiper motor and the remanufactured rear wiper motors do not have these additional 5th and 6th wires coming off the motor. Anyone have a correct wiring diagram for the 1999 rear wiper motor?

Look forward to any suggestions anyone might have. Thanks in advance.
