96 GLX Trouble Starting

Okay, the whole problem with my car started about 3 weeks ago. We were getting ready to head home from a trip and my car wouldn't start. I noticed that the gear indicator on my dash said that it was in Reverse and not in Park. We ended up towing the car to a garage and when we got there the car started. $80 later they told me that they thought that I needed to replace the Transmission MultiFunction Switch. The car started for the rest of the day and the following morning. Then when I go to leave from work the car doesn't start again. We replaced the Tranmission Multifunction Switch and it still had the same problem. I brought it to my mechanic and he traced all the wires connecting to the multifunction switch. car worked okay for a day and then the check engine light came back on and the car would not go into park. the next day the car doesnt start again. I brought it to a VW dealership about a week and a half ago. They determined it was a short in a wiring harness...they checked all the wires in the harness and found no short. then they told me it was the Transmission Control Module. We replaced that and it is still not starting. Now we are stuck....the dealership says they don't know where to check next. (not a good sign) does anyone have any ideas of what it may possible be?
Please help!

I got a phone call yesterday and they told me there was some wiring that was shorting out behind the instrument cluster. (two wires were in one slot and was shorting out) after they fixed the wiring the indicator on the dash wouldn't light up. the car was starting, but he said that the car may have problems again if we don't replace the instrument cluster. so at the moment we are waiting for an instrument cluster to come in. i just hope that was the real problem and i wont have to deal with this anymore.

the wires in the engine bay at the BIG circle connector next to the ignition coil tend to fray ( alot are for the transmission)

We got the new instrument panel in the car and is starting now. When I went to go pick it up they discoved something else wrong. The car jumps inbetween gear one and two when you are driving. So now they are taking out the transmission to see if they can find what is causing it to jump. This car is not my friend at all with the way it has been acting.

doesnt sound like a mechanical problem on this car. Sounds more like a wiring issue.

I just heard from the dealership today about my car. They ended up not pulling out the transmission, but are now waiting for someone to come in from VW of America to come look at it all the way from Chicago to Minnesota. They are pretty sure its something to do with the wiring, but the dealership can't find the problem. So hopefully by the end of the week they will know what really going on with this car.

sad a shop cant find wiring issues. disconnect the connector from the control module and check resistance from the module to the sensors. if its out of spec then theres a wiring issue. shouldnt take more than 2 days to find a wiring issue

I got a call today from the dealership. The guy from Chicago left and his diagnosis was that it is the transmission. He said that for the past couple months my car put itself into a safety mode because the car was only going into 3rd or 4th gear whenever I was running the car. In return fixing all those other wiring problems caused the transmission to come out of the safety mode and show the transmission problem. So right now we are looking for a transmission to put in the car.
