Question Am I Wrong..?

Rev limiters...

My buddy said that if you are going like 60mph in 5th gear, then miss 3rd and go into 1st...making the rpms JUMP from like 2K to bouncing on the rev limiter..the cars engine wouldn't be damaged..?

I believe the engine would be toast..? Right..? BTW, we where using a 04gt v8 stang for an example..

Aren't rev limiters built into the ignition and just prevent it from being able to rev that high by itself??

I know that if you stuck it into first gear your internals would become externals, because of the gear reduction or w/e being to great. But I know on the newer Celica's when they came out, they had a problem with the shift gate and on a 3 to 4th shift you could stick it into 2nd gear or something and blow the engine. Long time ago somebody linked a site to where a guy did this with his Acura RSX too and yeah, there were pieces of the con rod in the oil pan.

Re: Am I Wrong..?

My bud said rev limiters are exactly there to prevent "blowing the engine"..

I think that's bs though..and he didn't buy it..

Re: Re: Am I Wrong..?

Limiter is to stop it at a certain rpm when your maxing out the gear when accelerating, NOT DECCELERATING aka down shifting...

Re: Am I Wrong..?

Personally, I have gone into 2nd gear at about 80 mph. I figure I was close to 9k RPMs (almost double the redline of the engine). I popped the clutch back in after less than half a second though. And that engine is still running fine.

FYI: rev limiters only limit when cutting off the fuel keeps the engine from spinning any faster. If the engine is being spun by the momentum of the vehicle, then the rev limiter can't do jack.

Your totaly right.
Your friend needs educating.

A rev limiter, or rev cut simply stops the engine being over reved useing the throttle.
It cuts either fuel or spark to one or more cylinders.

It will do nothing if you happen to spin the wheels faster than they should in each gear.

Most engines will handle revs 2-3,000rpm above the recomended redline for a short period of time with out any serious damage, and some may go even higher if its the wheels turning the engine.
But there comes a point where the engine simple can't hold together and will go pop.

Yeah, some engines have a fuel cut off like, the third gen Vipers, have their's 200 RPM after redline. But MSD's digital ignition boxes have that built in. I know in our van in park or neutral it won't rev above 4000 rpm and just bounces between 3500-4000. In my g'mas Aurora though, the top speed limiter drops rpm's down to idle until your back under 126.

With the B&M Shift Kit in my truck, if it's in overdrive and I go WOT from a stop, without spinning, first gear maxes out at around 35, second gear @ 65, but I can put it into first on the gear selector and hold it there, I've had the speedometer show 45 mph in first gear when I spun out on snow once but I dont know what kind of revolutions the engine was turnin there, prolly close to 5.5K or 6K.

Re: Am I Wrong..?

I believe my honda has a system that disengages the tranny until the engine would be at a point below the rev limiter. I think I read that in the manual. People would blow alot of engines throwing the car into 2nd instead of 4th if this was not the case.

Is your car a stick or an auto? My auto e30 won't let me downshift to innapropriate gears on the freeway, but my 5 speed e30 sure as hell did.

Re: Am I Wrong..?

It's a stick. Trust me, it won't engage on my car. Let's just say I did a little research when driving the car home after purchasing it.

Rev limiter won't help in this case. If your friend thinks he's so smart, ask him to show you.
