87 s10 WILL NOT START

my 87 s10 is having some starting problems and my lack of car knowledge is not hleping out. It was trying to start, as in cranking a little and it just sounded like a dead battery. SO i got a NEW battery and now it doesn't even try. There is power to the starter/the clock and stereo through a wire that connects to the battery as well. The clocks and stero is working and the starter power will arc, but the power isnt making i through to he ignition.. no fireing.. no anything, doesn' even ttry. i've checked all fuses and made sure it is in park. also tapped tthe starter. ANY IDEAS!? i have no vehichle here! thanks

Re: 87 s10 WILL NOT START

There might be power to the starter, but the question is "is there enough power going to the starter"

The first thing that I would do is remove the cables and clean them up, along with all the metal that they contact with.
Then try starting the truck.

If it doesn't work it's either the cables it's self or the starter.

If possible run it into a electric shop to get them to test it all out for you. The parts add up fast if you replace every thing that doesn't need it. And yes I've seen even seasoned back yard mechanics do just that.

If it's the starter let us know, and we'll tell you how to replace it yourself.
It's about a 1 hour job but some shops will actually pull the motor to do it. I understand that the books say to pull the motor.
