Vacuum ball?

Is this what the 'vacuum ball' looks like?

is it what could cause air to blow through the vents when moving? (with all controls OFF)

?

Thanks in Advance!

Re: Vacuum ball?

Your 98 doesn't have a vacuum ball, it has a vacuum canister located in the driver side fender. One of the vacuum lines in your picture should appear to run right into the fender, it is actually going to the vacuum canister.

Yes, the one that bends toward the fender appears to go right in it. Could this hose being broken cause the air problem?

EDIT: What about this little plastic thing?
Could it also cause the problem?

Only way to check is to pull it and examine it for dryrot or cracks. With the plastic thing, pull it and blow through 1 side, it should allow air through and blowing from the other side shouldn't.

As to causing air to blow through the vents while moving, that's normal in our trucks... I wouldn't worry about it unless you're vent redirectors aren't working when you turn the knob.

Well; the blend door motor/acutator also isnt working, so it's very HOT air blowing through the vents. And it's already over 100 degrees outside here. It never had the problem with air blowing through the vents until the blend acutator quit.

Have you replaced the actuator?

Re: Vacuum ball?

I wanted to ask before but I didnt want to seem to be the only one who couldnt find the vacume ball on my 98, only to hear that there isnt one. I had a similar problem with the actuator that changed from "refresh" to "recirc (no outside air)". I removed the inside of the glove compartment (tofind out what was making that incessant ticking even when the indicator wasnt on) thevent cover was right there. I used a piece of wire to hold the little flap door open so it will only suck air from inside and not outside permanently. When I need some fresh air I just roll down the power window for a second. VOILA. I did this because no vacume was coming to the actuator. I guess I will now check inside my fender to see if that was the problem, if not I will live with it as it is.
