How do you know for sure a car has not been stolen before purchasing?

I'm about to purchase a 2002 Dodge Viper for a very low price. Almost to cheap to believe. How can I know for sure this car has not been stolen and I'm getting a stolen car?

Thanks,

I believe you can call the state police in your state and ask.

Re: How do you know for sure a car has not been stolen before purchasing?

You'll have to be careful what you ask because you may not get the right answer. You would probably tell the police the VIN that you see on the dash but be aware theives would change the VIN tag so that they wouldn't get caught as easily. Typically, cars like this will have multiple VINs that you can check to be sure that all are the same. Of course you will want to be sure that the title is real, has no leins and is up to date. You should be able to call your motor vehicle dept for this.

And then of course it could be an accident car, salvaged , flooded or even in an expensive state of disrepair that could make it seem too cheap...
