RSX engine swaps

I have a nephew that has an RSX, and he is wanting to swap in the Type-S engine and tranny. I have a few questions;

1)What the engine codes for the two engines?
2)How much for the Type S engine and tranny?
3)Is the swap that simple, or would we need to change out sensors and other things like that?
4)Are there any other compatible engine swaps?
5)Anyone have a boosted RSX on here?

I read the FAQ, but not much info in there. Any help and/or hints would be appreciated.

You might want to check out clubrsx.com there are a lot of war stories about these topics.

I would be surprised if you could swap engines, transmissions, brakes, etc. for less than the price difference between the base and the Type-S.

But, whatever floats your boat! Maybe you just want the challenge!! Or maybe you got all that stuff for free........

Like I said it's my nephew that is wanting to do this, but I will help. Just trying to find out if it's doable and cost wise, if it's worth it.

1) Base RSX is K20A3, 2002-2004 Type S is K20A2, 2005-2006 Type S is K20Z1

2) I'm not that sure to tell you the truth. I THINK its around 4 grand but don't quote me on that one.

3) Not quite sure.

4) Apart from the 2002-2004 Type S engine, there is the earlier mentioned K20Z1 from the 2005+ RSX-S. It gets a bit more power through Integra Type R cams, changed ECU, higher flowing intake manifold, catalytic converter, exhaust and more. Its only 10 hp and 1 tq however. The main benefit of the K20Z1 over the K20A2 is the transmission, with a lower final gear ratio for quicker acceleration and carbon synchronizers replacing brass on 5th and 6th gears for a smoother shift feel.

There is also the K20A, which is the Integra (Japanese RSX) Type R motor. It gets 217 or 220 hp, and is an awesome NA engine (used in some Lotus Elises and all Ariel Atoms as well), however it uses (brace yourself) 98 octane fuel. That said a boosted K20A2 would get the best gains right now (maybe later the K20Z1 will show more of its potential but as it is there's still more to be learned about it, etc.).

My personal opinion is that trading the car in for a used Type S would be a much more financially sound idea, plus you get the other advantages of the Type S and slightly better resale value.

i dont know much bout cars im juss getting into it but i have a 1993 civic hatch with a gsr swap i was wondering would it be hard to put a k20 into the civic

Hmm, if you're just doing it for fun, then you shouldn't have much of a problem with the engine swap from base to TypeS. This site has the RSX service manual that you might be able to look through to note differences between the base and TypeS - http://www.hondahookup.com/manuals/
You will have to create an account to access, but it's definitely worth it.

As far as cost, I agree that it would be cheaper just to buy a TypeS. It's only a $3500 difference between the two. I'm sure your swap is going to cost much more.

1) Like "Canuck" says...
2) The cheapest I've seen so far is for $5500 including tranny and ecu and stuff. Junkyard might charge less
3) Swap is completly bolt on as long as you get the whole set, including tranny and ecu.
4) K24's will fit. Gives you a better platform for turbo.
5) Many turbo kits out there, but keep in mind that type-s motor has 11 to 1 compression. Not really designed for boost. There are people out there putting K20a2 head on K24 for boost application, but you are talking a lot of money. +/-$3500 for K24, +/- $5000 for K20. For that much, you nephew can sell the RSX and get himself a WRX or Evo.
