jeep takes forever to start...

i bought a '90 jeep cherokee pioneer today. Then i took it wheeling that night with a friend, well i went through a river and then a puddle and another puddle and then my jeep start to run really really rough. But, it runs fine at above 1000 rpm but once it gets under, it stahls out. Then it takes 5-10 minutes to get it started up again, but the entire time its trying to turn over so hard that its shaking the jeep. Then i went back through some records and saw that the crank sensor has had to be replaced like every year for the last 4 years, and once it was twice in a year... could there be a monster load of water in my engine? It still turns over and i can get it started, but it dies when i let it idle. Or maybe i blew a fuse or the wiring harness is bad? Any help and fast would be greatly appreciated......

Sounds like some water or mud may have penetrated one (or more) of your sensor connectors. Have you rinsed everything off yet? I'd start carefully disconnecting the harnesses to the sensors and checking to see if they're clean.

My '88 has a few bad connector seals and I found some corrosion that caused me some rough idling a while back. A few quick shots with contact cleaner and a bit of elbow grease fixed it.

Make sure your EGR valve is closing too.

Thanks a ton! I ended up going back through everything and finding out my wiring harness is bad at the little black fuse block thing. Their all corroded and nasty. Any ideas as to how long it would take to replace a wiring harness???

I'd get a few cans of contact cleaner and try spraying the connectors. Get some old toothbrushes and pipe cleaners to see if you can clear out any residue.

Exactly, which fuse box thing are you referrring to? Replacing a harness is not a trivial matter.
