'95 Gas Gauge and Check Engine Light problem.
As far as I know both of these problems are unrelated. Neither of which show any signs, that I am aware of, of the car having problems.
This isn't a real issue but mostly it is annoying. My gas Gauge when full goes way past the full mark. Aside from that, when it gets passed 50% it fluctuates between empty and 50% depending on if I am going up or down a hill. It doesn't stick in places or anything and I have yet to get all the way to empty and run out of gas. In fact, I am not even sure if my car has a low fuel light. I have searched a bit and saw that other people have other gas gauge problems but mine seems to be a bit different in that I don't have any other known starting or running problems. The other issue is with my check engine light coming on. It comes on while running but if I turn the car off and then back on the problem is gone. It usually only happens on the highway. I messed around a bit today and I noticed that if I accelerate up to around 70 mph then coast, as I approach 60 while I decelerate when I get around 60-65 the check engine light comes on. I can drive in that range on cruise with no problem, however if I stay at 60-65 mph and accelerate around there the light will come on. As far as I know, when I drive nothing else changes in the car. I don't hear any noise or feel any vibrations etc. I bought the car from my father in-law and he told me he has had the same problem for years. Any read-outs he has had done have come up pretty much clean. These two problems don't seem to have any real impact on driving my car. However, they could be signs to other major issues. |

Re: '95 Gas Gauge and Check Engine Light problem.
hey Ruh, the funny gas gauge thing jappens alot on pontiacs for some reason. i have a 99'GA and an 01' and they both do that. I figure when the fuel pumps go out i'll fix mine. I just keep track of the mileage so i know when its close to running out. Both only have a 12gal tank. I thought its probley the float level sloshes around and gets on top of this square thing thats in the tank.
the missing out on the highway sounds like maybe the EGR is pluging up. just a thought. |

Uhh yea...the EGR...of...course it is.........
Hehe thanks though I'll look into it. Also, I assume that I have a 12gal tank on the 95 too from what you are saying? If you aren't sure ill check around and see. |

Ha...okay I just looked up what the EGR is. If it is clogged how would I go about figuring that out and what steps would I take to correct it?

Re: '95 Gas Gauge and Check Engine Light problem.
Your gas tank should accually be 'round 18 gal. I had a 93' it had a 22gal, so its hard to say.
THe EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) system consists of an electric EGR vavle and the PCM. The Pcm controls the EGR flowrate, energizing the EGR solenoid/coil, opening and closing the EGR. A scan tool is required for complete testing the EGR. |
