1937 Plymouth - tried something new

During Hot August Nights Car Show (Reno) I saw a great looking 37 Plymouth... Izzy (the owner) built it himself and it sure was nice. Thought I'd try and draw it from photos I took of it. He really changed it.. flip-top hood section, suicide doors... WOW.

For the drawing, I only sketched it, then took it to the computer. Did line (Illy) art over my sketch, then used PS airbrush to color. I'm not comfortable with it, but I sure like it. Wish Illy and PS had the ability to color only within the lines (as Freehand does)... but setting the pressure on the airbrush pen almost worked... anyway, I finally gave up on it, but still would appreciate your CC's and tips re: PS airbrushing. ahh very nice!

in Photoshop make a selection first then airbrush and your selection area will contain the color. You can also save selections so you reload them whenever you want.

Really really nice Robo.

Wuts up Robo.
That looks fantastic.

There is an interesting PS color job in the book,
How to Draw Cars the Hot Wheels Way by Scott Robertson.

Just check it out at the book store and take some notes, then you won’t have to buy it.

Re: 1937 Plymouth - tried something new

Lemorris/Al... thanks. I do own the book and will go through it soon. I did try to do a selection, thne airbrush... but somehow, I lost the vector line on the top of the hood??

The bigger problem is that when I export the Illy file, I do get layers in PS, but they are "layer images" and I could not open each layer.. it was like flattened into a single layer? Is there a way to save each sub-layer. That would really help. Thanks again, Robo

Re: 1937 Plymouth - tried something new

export from Illy not save as...export as photoshop and make sure layers are checked...remember if your Illy file is one layer your photoshop file will be one layer too. In photoshop double click on the background layer to unlock it. Use the magic wand or whatever selection tool to select areas then fill or brush in color.

OH!! when exporting vectors out of Illy make sure the anti-ailaising is turned off...thats very important.

Another cool thing is to duplicate your lineart layer in Photoshop and keep it as your top copy. Set the layer properties to Multiply and you will get a black trap line that drops over the color layers underneath it just like old cell based cartoons.

Hey, did you know that you can drag and drop from Illustrator to photoshop? I found that out quite by accident one night when I was tired and forgot I was working with 2 different programs

Great drawing, really classic looking car!

Really nice although the body work would require more contrast to get the shape coming out more. Good effort anyway.

Cool car! Cars from that era are like rolling sculpture.
I love the work on the wheels and tires.
The angle of the hood makes the rest of the car tough to see.
Great engine though. It could really use some darks in the body.
